The main thing though is you fall down a lot unless you have studded tires, and only the expensive ones work good.

This has not been my experience. I have used Nokians with carbide studs and Innovas with plain steel studs and both work just fine. I suspect the Innova studs won't last as long, but I can buy three Innova tires for the price of one Nokian.

I'll commute in the single digits F, and I'll 'joyride' at anything above 32F.

BTW, I count utility runs (bill-paying and such) where I just explore and meander, as joyrides, too.

I have online banking it is never too cold to pay bills with a hot cup of chocolate and some marshmellows put in the amount and hit send. The electrons get out in the cold for me.

I know, I was hoping you'd say you want to come over and do the nightride with me. Much nicer when you got another rider to watch your back for lions etc.:D First time I went up alone, sort of scary till you get used to the darkness!:p

We were riding up a canyon here every Tuesday night before the time change and it would get dark about the time we reached the end of the canyon. I broke down and got a Mini Newt and a flock of blinkies but I never felt comfortable. I will ride in the dark if I have but you know how it is in this state, when someone asks if you ride in the rain of cold you say, no I wait till tomorrow.

So true! I don't mind getting wet on the bike, I mind more getting the bike all icky! We did a 42 miler last Sunday on the tandem, last 10 in the rain and the bike was soo dirty. Took about 2 hours to get back into good shape. You're right, it's better to wait a day. Riding at night is no big deal, just a different view I wanted to experience. I've taken the mtb out on SART for 42 miles in the pouring rain just for a different view. It's no big deal but again, the bikes get so icky!:D

I'm good down to about 14F for 18-22mph rides to church choir and back 15 miles r/t.

40F is the general cutoff for putting my young kids in the Madsen.

depends on the temperature and/or my mood.

Joyriding ends at 20*F. Below that is just try to prove something.

I assume that you mean that you are trying to prove something below 20F, because the rest of us are just having fun. When the lady and I went for a walk last night to watch the eclipse, it was around 0F. We ran into a pack of a half dozen fatbikers at the Fish Creek estuary, who were passing a flask and having a ball (we traded temporary possession of our binoculars for temporary possession of their flask :D). We saw several XC skiers, and at Westchester Lagoon there were at least a hundred people out ice skating, plus another dozen or so pedestrians out to watch the lunar event. None of us were out to prove anything, we were just having fun.

or is it just commuters out there? (40F or lower)

I do, although less than when it's warmer. I'm trying to figure out the best way to haul photographic gear on my bike so I can get out into the parks and take pictures of the fallen snow.

The one and only time I came off my bike was when I hit a sheet of ice I didn't spot until it was too late.

I ride out year round as long as I can crank those pedals and turn the wheels!
