Compared to Last Year...

Last Spring was my first start of the warm season on a bicycle in about 5 or 6 years. I have been riding almost everyday since December 2000. It is funny how I've changed as a cyclist by just realizing what I care about when cycling. Last year I was almost obsessed with miles. It felt really good to be able to ride 100 miles a week, and I thought of little else until I was close to that number. This year I don't care about miles. In fact I don't even use my odometer anymore. This year I care about places. There are towns that I didn't ride in last year that I can't wait to visit by bicycle this year.

Last year I rode my bicycle for almost a week before I figured out that the noise in my wheel was a broken spoke. This year I'm almost constantly maintaining my bike. I'm still not able to true my wheel with accuracy, but if I get a truing stand this summer I'll almost never have to go to my LBS.

I wonder what I'll care about next April.

Hi AF,

Great post! I was really hooked on the idea of maintaining a constant heart rate when out cycling last year, and now, it's getting fit to join the Police!

Fingers crossed eh!

One thing I cared about, then gave up on for a while, now I'm starting to seriously care about it again, is developing the stamina
to use my bike to get to work everyday without any other transportational support whatsoever. I have a long way to go.

I will need to be able to maintain 140 mile weeks, every week, without overdoing it. Also, I will need to conquer cold rain, which I have not done yet. In the end, when I succeed, I will be able to say, "I can use my bike all the time. So can you!"

Best of luck Pete!

You can do anything if you put your mind to it
