Used Clipless Pedals?

I'm thinking about buying a pair of used clipless pedals off eBay. I've been browsing around and I've found a lot of older models (3-4 years old). Should I be worried about any wear/tear on used pedals? Is there any reason why getting used clipless pedals would be a bad idea?

Thanks for the help.

Bikes: are fun to ride

Clipless pedals work off a tension spring and that could wear over time. Are you looking for a road or mtb pedal?

There are decent pedals out there that are relatively cheap in price.

Road. So getting a pair of old Shimano pedals (3-4 years old, but majority of that time it was unused) would be a bad idea?

Used pedals and how much use have they had? May be 4 years old and virtually nothing or 1 year old and falling apart. No way of knowing how worn the pedal is- But they will come with cleats. Cleats do show wear so that is what I would look at first.
