Theft and Security

In a few days I'm moving house and will no longer have a secure locked garage. I'm moving to Cambridge where my £550 Giant Talon 2 will have to go under cover and lock in the back garden. Hopefully I can still use it to commute.

I have 2 pretty chunky locks for it and after a year in Southampton they have survived 3 attempted thefts via bolt cutters (one guy was even caught and arrested on the spot - the idiot was on a busy high street in a balaclava near a school with bolt cutters, possibly the most ambitious thief ever) personally it sickens me that people think that any kind of theft is acceptable let alone bike theft. I also have an immobitag fitted though i'm not certain how it works...

Do I really have any chance of still owning this bike in a years time? I find it ridiculous the lengths people will go to just to steal an expensive bike - I lost my old Giant Terrago a few years ago at a train station despite having 2 decent locks on it... I'm on the verge of accepting the loss of this one and just getting something cheap - it makes me so angry that it has come to this just because there are too many foul people in the country who want to steal bikes.

Oh well, rant over... wish me luck - I'd be interested to hear any security tips or any other stories/ rants people have.

You can't keep it in a bedroom or living room or somewhere inside?

The bath tub or shower is space that otherwise only gets used for a few minutes each day.

Why didn't they break into your garage? Maybe a hardshell storage unit would work.

Find a cheap used bike; put it in decent working condition, but don't spend anything to make it look good. In fact, make it look bad to discourage theives. I have a bike made up entirely of parts I found in the dump which I ride if I'm going to lock it ouside for some time. Mechanically it is in tip top condition, cosmetically, it is drab and dul land looks dirty, but isn't.

A Folding bike , takes up little room inside.

Heck you can even fold them up while you are half way thru working on them..

Perhaps my little tale can shed some light.

Just today I had to remove a cable lock of medium strength I had on some ladders stored outside on which I'd forgotten the combination. I thought I'd take the opportunity to see just how strong it was...using an angle grinder with a cut-off wheel.

FOUR SECONDS. FOUR SECONDS...and I'm a klutz with tools.

Saints Alive, a white-hot knife through butter is slower!

The above advice to store your rig inside is well taken.

Either no bike, or keep it inside with you. But what happens on the other end of your daily ride? How are you going to secure it there?
