I mean, sure you can have clipless pedals, but the price of those shoes is exorbitant. I figure most riders only have one pair. So, do your shoes smell like dead sturgeons washed up on the beach let out to dry for a week, when you air them out after a long ride?

No, I also wash my socks, plus spray a little alchohol or fabreeze into the shoes.

Nope. Have never had those issues but have always spayed them with a shot of Lysol before putting them away. Bowling alleys do the same and surely they have researched the effectiveness!

i've used the same pair of SPD shoes for my daily 30 miles of commuting for over 3 years now. (that's thousands and thousands of miles on the shoes)
no odor issues to report.

Why would SPDs be any different in this regard than other clipless systems, like Looks, Speedplays, etc.?
And the answer to the OP's question for me personally is no.

No odor problems here. Wash your socks or for that matter, try wearing socks.

I only have one pair of shoes and have never had any smell or odor problems. I wear clean socks on each ride. I've never sprayed or washed them, unless getting caught in the rain counts as washing.

I think statement is the source of confusion. I guess it depends on your standards but I don't consider the $75 I spent on my Shimano SPD MTB shoes back in 2005 to be "exorbitant." I'm not a big spender on shoes (in that I rarely buy a new pair) and these Shimanos are one of my cheapest pairs of shoes.
I've biked about 30,000 miles in those shoes and am now starting to think about replacing them (soles are worn down and they squeak on my pedals). Considering that runners replace their shoes every 500 miles or so, I feel like I've done pretty good.
And no, they don't stink even though they've been through 6 hot, humid summers and just as many cold, wet winters.

And I have 4 pair of cycling shoes at the moment, with plans to get another 1 or 2 shortly.

If you have foot odor problems, it is your socks more likely than the shoes. Try pure cotton to check, cheap and easy to clean. Good in summer.

In my experience, foot/shoe odor indicates an athlete's foot problem. Dry the shoes in direct sun, then treat them and your feet with anti-fungal.
Re-using dirty clothes just begs for problems, whether socks or shorts. Don't do it.

After rain during three days of a summer tour, my shoes smelled horrible. Washing and drying helped a bit, but the cure came by soaking the shoes in a bucket of water with a half cup of bleach for about 15 minutes.

You can wash them in mild soap and water. Remove the insole, immerse and agitate in mild soap solution (dish detergent works), rinse thoroughly, and let air dry. The bleach trick above is certainly good too, though bleach is caustic so I recommend a 10% solution for just a minute or two, and only if necessary.

No. Mine smell fine. I have three pairs fwiw.
I plan on adding a pair of carbon road shoes and a pair of winter clipless shoes this year.
Good shoes are a worthwhile investment.

Every now and then I get my SPDs a bit muddy. Offroading round here and we don't have dry summers. Shoes get scrubbed clean and washed under the tap so they do get washed out several times a year- or weekly in the winter.

Some shoes are much more breathable (more poreous) than others. I like Sidi's for all but winter. Then I wear covers for the cold. But I never have a problem with odor.

My shoes don't stink, I find that wool socks do wonders for preventing odor.
