I am pretty close to my ideal 5 now.
1. Currently have a cannondale caad 3 that converted nicely to a tri bike. Would rather have a kestrel air foil.
2. Currently have a 1971 peugeot U-08 which is converted into a fixed gear. Would rather have masi fixed.
3. My touring bike is a 1973 Raleigh Supercourse which I built up from a frame and fork with 70's shimano 600 Arabesque group and coldset to fit modern 8 speed wheels a brooks b-17 and velo orange rando bars. I love this bike. Just need to get a rack and panniers on it.
4. Don't have it yet but may pick up on friday a Jamis eclipse. Can't go wrong with a sub 18 pound steel bike. I have wanted one for so long.
5. All I need now is a designated winter bike. I am thinking an old Reynolds 531 trek that was made for 27 inch wheels so I would have the clearance to put some studded tires and fenders on it.

I never count the tandem as being "my bike" as it was an engagement gift to my wife and this is a keeper, like her.

I only need three:

1. the long-distance bike - a long-wheelbase recumbent (Cycle Genius Falcon) which I already have. For long wandering rides, the riding comfort is simply fantastic. If I could only have ONE bike, this would be what I'd want.

2. the city/commuting bike - A RANS crank-forward bike. I already own a Fusion a few years old, but a Sequoia or Dynamik might do better--they weren't available ~6 years ago when I got the Fusion). I had to make my own rear rack to attach grocery baskets but the racks they have now are said to be better than in the past. This bike handles like an upright bike, but is still much more comfortable to ride (though not as comfortable as #1).

3. the off-road bike ,,,,,, I'd like a fat-tire (Pugsly-style) 2WD bike for MTB riding. Nobody makes that though, so I'd have to do it myself. I feel that some form of hydraulic drive would work far better for this than the existing 2WD systems I have seen. And I don't really have anywhere nearby convenient for off-road riding, so this isn't a major priority anytime soon. Hopefully someday though....
