messenger job

Hello,
I was looking at the other forums and spotted the work related jobs such as Messenger. I don't think there is any kind of business here where I live. but is there a need for it ? is there any of you that do it on your own or do you need to start a company with some carriers ?
I wonder if I call around to places and see. what is your take on it? I would have to be bonded to hmm thanks Karl

Do you have courier companies where you live? Many courier companies have a vehicle division, a bicycle division, and a walking division. The bicycle division of a courier company is also known as "bicycle messengers".

The bicycle and walking divisions generally deliver envelopes and smaller packages around the downtown area of the city. The vehicle division will usually deliver larger items or items needing to go some distance.

So if you're interested, give your local courier companies a call.

Your first question: "is there a need for it". Redding is where you're at and its population isn't that big. Redding is the county seat of Shasta County so maybe the county court system and county recorder's office would be where documents need to be delivered.

What makes bike messenging work and valuable is a glut of traffic, a dearth of parking and an asston of population density.. I don't know Redding, but does it have any of these?

In the golden age of couriers (tm), there were no fax machines or e-mail.

When you talk to a bike messenger you will hear a few recurring themes.

--Pay is terrible
--VERY few full time jobs left
--Pay is getting worse
--Number of jobs is still declining

Email has killed it and in my opinion will keep killing it. When you saw the glamour era of bike messengers it was in the 80's before the web. Far be it from me to keep you from following your dream but people who end up being successful and comfortable in life tend not to enter professions in which you can see obsolescence in the near future.

But the Fax machine was invented in 1843 decades ahead of the ordinary or safety bicycles. Though I suppose there may have been messengers riding draisines.

You could always pull ads around town, they are lighter than a pedicab and you wouldn't have to rush.
