PS.

It's truly not an exaggeration.

Now the thread has become a health-related public service announcement.

So ya see, we've probably even helped some people, because of the length of this thread.

So, the water bottle had been out of the freezer for quite sometime. I port my bike outside, stop to take a few sips of water and return my water bottle back to its rack. After running a few errands, I end up near my last destination, the San Francisco Public Library. I notice that there are quite a few homeless people sitting about. That's not so unusual, there are usually homeless people sitting about the downtown library.

However, this time the homeless bunch looks like it has a few really seriously strung out dope fiends, crackheads, or whatever. They're filthy and
they all seemed to be staring at me and my new Raleigh Grand Prix. Suddenly, I get this nervous feeling, like I really shouldn't walk into the library and leave my bike unattended. Next, I'm wondering if my OnGuard U-lock is going to be sufficient. So I lock up my bike and slowly walk towards the library. I spy out of the glass window door, attempting to observe any movement towards my bike. All seems clear. There's no movement. I quickly walk into the library to conduct all of my library business, as fast as possible.

Next thing you know, I ran into an old co-worker from a previous job. So we're just laughing, talking, and casually shooting the breeze, when I suddenly remembered those sketchy homeless people gawking at me and my bike. I therefore, quickly excused and dismissed myself. I practically ran to the door, where I could at least glance at my bike. Shhisssh! It was still there! I felt so relieved....

After returning to my bike, I looked down at my water bottle. It was half empty....I didn't remember drinking that much water as I exited my home. However, I was thirsty and yearned for some more nice cool water to refresh me. I touched the bottle. The water was still cool. I looked at that same homeless crowd, as they also looked upon me. They all appeared to have a slight smile on their faces, as though something might have taken place, that most probably shouldn't have.

I therefore, took the water bottle, and returned to the library. I washed out my bottle and then filled it once again with some nice cool water from the water fountain, and drank it all down. I then refilled it, again!

Would you say that I have trust issues, or would you have done something similar?
They were thinking, "Why is he riding that POS? Why isn't he riding a carbon fiber frame?"

What are you? Some kinda mentalist or something?

Actually, I got the Grand Prix for these four reasons (not that I have to, but I will):

1) I've always wanted a lugged chromoly steel bike.

2) I purchased it through a friend back in Ohio, who happens to own a bicycle dealership. Therefore, I only paid $700 for it, shipping included!

3) After I customize it, and convert it into a ten speed with Ultegra Gruppo, it will be quite a different bike altogether.

4) I want to drop a bunch of chromoly steel naysayers like you with it, just so I can see that stupid expression on your faces, change to another level of stupid!

PS.

Besides, we'll see what's a POS in ten years from now. Will it more likely be my illustrious Grand Prix or your top of the line carbon fiber bike?

Pick any one of 'em!

Maybe it's the geek in me, but my first thought was "Uh, if there was still some ice in there and it melted while you were inside, of course the volume went down." Because, well, that's the way water ice works.

Yes! Of course, I'm well aware of the fact that the volume of ice is slightly greater than that of water. However..NOT THAT MUCH!

Why not just buy a case of bottled water and have a fresh bottle any time you want. When on the road and if in doubt you can always throw it out and buy another along the way. I'm sure you can adapt them to your cages.

The person who drank out of your water bottles was probably double-dog-dared by the others and is really grossed out by the deed and is now languishing in an alley somewhere, worried that he may have caught something from you.

You know...I never really looked at it from that standpoint, but you've got a helluva point there!

With all the pointless washing out of your bottle, you did pay extra attention to the nipple that actually goes into your mouth to remove the bacteria and viruses you think might have been deposited there by a bunch of people who might be entirely innocent?

Pointless?

Now that sounds like a forgone conclusion, if ever I've heard one. Of course, I paid special attention to the nipple!

Most likely nobody touched your bottle. Most likely your paranoia about the homeless people, expressed by your prior behavior, led you to twist reality to align with your imaginary world where most people suck. Most people, including homeless people, don't suck.

I don't judge people by groups or categories. There are many variations of homeless people, just like there are many variations of everybody else. I usually, take time to observe someone's behavior, over a period of time, before I conclude what type of person they might be.

I try very hard not to make the mistake that you just did, by misjudging anyone...

Well... you didn't actually say so.

Your paranoia about homeless people is about on par with that for carbon fibre bikes.

Both of which seem... sort of... pointless.

They can't walk into a public library and use the same water fountain you just used?
Next time when you are faced with that situation, walk up to the 'homeless' and ask how things are going.
Hey . . . they are human, just like you and far less suspicious!
No way of knowing whether they were checking out a bike with a view to stealing it or just admiring it. I quite often do the latter when I see a nice bike (or a nice car).
Someone who doesn't know me doesn't know that I have no intention of stealing it.

If the homeless folks were constantly turfed out of the library they might not be able to just go in and use the water fountain.

The OP could have drunk more than he realised (happened to me a lot), maybe the homeless folks wanted some water and couldn't be bothered to go the library, maybe they didn't know you could get water at the library, maybe they fancied having a prank. Maybe they just emptied some on the street to worry the guy. Who knows?

Water bottles are cheap enough that if it bothers you dump it in the trash and buy another one. Personally when I leave my bike unattended (which I do as rarely as humanly possible) I make sure the wheels, frame and saddle are locked and anything that can be removed without tools in 10 seconds or less comes with me.

Now he's wandering the streets continuously muttering "Chromoly, chromoly, chromoly,..."

I've posted enough times, that you should already know by now, that I'm actually a fan of carbon bikes, I'm just a bigger fan of chromoly steel!

Therefore, just like your many other claims in life, you're wrong again!
