She picked a bike!!! (now I have to find one for her!)

That's good! The bad is, of course that it doesn't exist any more. Let me explain.

My wife like to come riding with me but doesn't like her bikes, either the MTB that she's had for years or her Marathon Mixtie. She had the chance to rent a "comfort bike" on vacation last week and LOVED it. She rode faster on that thing that I ever remember her riding on any other bike and smiled the whole time. She liked the way it felt comfort wise and the way it fit and the way it....shifted. Particularly the way it shifted. Of course it's an 8-spped shimano internally geared hub! I searched the 'net real quick during our rest stops and cold find NO one making a similar bike now. I not-so-subtly offered to BUY the very bike that she was riding from the rental company. No dice. So, when we got home I launched an all out search for an 8 speed IGH step-through comfort bike for her and.... I still can't find one!

Is there any one out there making a bike like this now? Please help me find one!

What brand was it? They still make bikes with the 8 speed nexus hubs, Breezer is one that comes to mind. If all else fails build one up on a frame that she likes. Electra is another.

My wife had a very nice GT Slipstream that we bought her about the time we were married, she never really mastered the 21 speed gear system. We won a 1972 Raleigh Colt 3 speed at a vintage event in Minneapolis. It fast became her favorite bike, she rode it more in the next 6 months than she had ridden the GT in the previous 6 years. We have since sold the Slipstream and have added 2 more 3 speeds and a 5 speed IGH to her bike collection. Eventual plan is to build up either an 8 speed or 11 speed IGH on a mixte frame for her.

What age and type of dropouts on the Mixte she has? You might be able to convert it.

They don't usually have internal hubs, but the Trek Navigators(now being discontinued/re-branded for 2013) are VERY comfortable. I don't know what the 2013 equivalent model is though.

Jamis Navigator 3.0. I can't convert any thing other than an different comfort bike with a shock. It's the whole package that she liked. I suppose that an 8 speed derailure might be OK if there is no other way. One sided shifting is the limit though!

Bill, that one is close! I'd have to fit a shock on it though but a cheep shock is more cost-efficient than an 8-speed hub I think.

I'm actually kind of surprised... I've seen a number of urban comfort style bikes with IGH these days. I suppose it depends on what your LBS decide to stock. Take a look at OPUS brand bikes. They have some really sweet looking bikes. My wife recently got an Opus Nuovella:

Step through style, 7 speed IGH, alum frame (relatively lightweight)... she looks and feels far more comfortable on it than she ever did with her old hybrid.

You can buy shock forks after market, not sure why anybody would want one for anything other than downhill. I have on on my city bike that I plan to replace.
