Others place a different value on such things though, hence their worth in the marketplace will win out in the end.

To me, all bikes with dropped handlebars and/or ass hatchet saddles are worth about the same as an expensive bottle of wine, i.e. worthless, since I have no use for either. I wouldn't pay a dime for either of 'em.

Yep, though the word I would use is outrageous. I don't get it. I have posted stuff for sale on craigslist at prices I considered to be reasonable: 40%-50% less than retail for something in really good condition, and would get few or no inquires. I can't imagine these people who are asking 10% off retail (or sometimes full retail) ever get any inquiries, much less actually sell anything. Yet, the outrageous prices persist. As others have said already, some good deals can be found, but they usually go fast, sometimes within a couple of hours.

I'm a notorious cheapskate. There are times when buying new is a better value than buying used. A used bike that needs new tires, seat & chain and general attention can add up to close to the price of the new equivalent. Keep your eyes on sales at bike shops and look for leftover models.
