There is this car commercial (I meant to post this before, but forgot, now I remembered after seeing this bunk one more time)
in which this guy is on his computer at work late into the night. He looks like he's burned out, wasted and otherwise half-dead.

Next, he walks past the snack/coffee machines to the basement garage where his new car is parked.

He screams around almost naked streets at nerve-crunching speed.

He gets back in front of his computer, wired, fired and ready-to-go. ("Don't take with other stimulants," a warning flashes.)

Barfo.

Thank you for posting that pete! I hate that commercial, and thought about posting the same thing last week.

Gimme a break. But then, they're car manufacturers- what are they going to show in an ad, the rush you get from cycling?

There's an ad running these days about 'using alternative means of transport' or some such thing, how in the future we'll have to think of ways to travel around without fouling the air. Instead of showing someone on a bike, they show a guy on a recumbent.Nothing wrong with that, but the guy looks more like a cyclist, and in fact I'm sure he is. And he's wearing time-trial helmet, no doubt to make him look futuristic. It's kind of incongruous. Of course, a bike is kind of mundane, but a bent also looks futuristic. It's a weird ad.

Ummm... Wabbit, you're about to catch some flame from the recumbent guys... recombants are bikes and recumbent riders are cyclists.

On the other hand, I know the ad you refer to. The rider is in a blue and silver skinsuit with a silver time-trial helmet. The 'bent is almost certainly there because it looks futuristic -- it all looks like a scene from Things to Come.

Very strange ad in a lot of ways...

And I agree, the rider looks like an upright bike rider.

Thanks for reminding me why I don't watch T.V. Well one of the reasons anyway.

I've never seen that commercial. Thanks for sharing it. Now I know I haven't missed anything.

We've got a new Gap commerial in the UK, a group of happy smilie beautiful young people casually riding ordinary looking bikes throught the city. Its the most positive image of riding Ive seen on TV in a long while.
Im going to head down to Gap right now and exchange my hard earned cash for some new Chinos.

My friends and I always laugh at that commercial. It appears the be a San Francisco street that they are riding down.

First of all, imagine how many people were inconvenienced to get that street cleared to shoot the commercial.

Then we wondered how many times people bit it trying to get the thing right. You will notice that it is almost summer and yet the people in the ads are wearing long sleeves and pants.

I don't know if really paints cycling in a positive or negative light. It's just some impossible looking people riding down an impossibly empty street w/o helmets.

Anybody ever watch the HGTV station (Home & Garden TV?). In any show that wants to portray a wonderful, perfect, happy suburban neighborhood, it seems like they always have a couple of cyclists on hybrids, out for a leisurely cruising the boulevard pass through the scene.

So, I guess it's a notion that appeals to a lot of people, even non-cyclists. Probably the same people who buy bikes, ride them once, and subsequently let them rust in the garage.

The gap ad sounds sort of dumb- who's going to get dressed up in nice GAP clothes and then go out riding and get grease on their pants? Probably the same ones who let their bikes rust in the garage!

It's so weird that, outside of the tour de france, people on tv and in movies are shown riding bikes in the most contrived situations. Like it's a last ditch resort thing to do.

Bikes: 1 trek, serotta, rih, de Reus, Pogliaghi and finally a Zieleman! and got a DeRosa

hey come on, lets not knock those folks who
buy high dollar bikes and ride em once.
How else do you get great deals on litespeed,
colnago, and trek OCLV bikes at yard sales?
I mean, someones got to supply us!

I liked the commercial (car, don't remember which)
where the group of serious looking riders (full kit etc)
stop to let this new car go by and half of them
fall over after lusting for this particular vehicle.

There is one commercial for a vehicle that I do like. I think it's for the Nissam Xterra but I'm not sure.
This mountain biker comes dragging up to his SUV all muddy, bruised and bloody, carrying his saddle and pushing his bike. He drops the bike and gets out the first-aid kit, grabs a couple items, goes back to his bike and tapes his seat back on with the tape from the first-aid kit, hops back on the bike, takes off, does about a four foot drop and keeps riding. It's not what you're expecting.

I love that ad- what a hoot. You think he's going to fix up his wounds, but then he fixes his bike. LOL.
