Fixing up old bikes
Hey guys and gals, I'd like to see a section/topic started about fixing up bikes, especially old junkers found in the back of garages or at yard sale. These bikes usually have dry-rot tires, lots of rust, dry bearings, and a real need for attention.
Please ask for advice and help about fixing up that old bike you forgot you had and the more knowledgeable forum members can help us understand what we're looking for.

I have a few bikes in the shed that need fixed. All of them need new tires, brakes, grease, and tuning.
I started working on the Huffy Marathon 10 that I recently bought for $15 at a yard sale. We may be having trouble with the Elgin American Derailleurs, if anyone has some information on those it would be appreciated.
My next project is going to be the Ultra Terrain Roadmaster with Shimano Index System Derailleurs, it just need tuned and greased.
Next would be my old Murray, the peddle broke off and I need some advice on where to buy a new one.
Lastly would be my step-dad's 3 speed Columbia Bromleigh.
I would also like to ask for any good places to buy parts like tires, cables, and brakes at great prices.

It will just die as soon as people stop posting to it...oops.
Ebay has lots of cheap parts and if you are in the states, lots of cheap shipping. Canadian Tire is fair for stuff in Canada, this is cheap low end stuff, but new is better then old and dead. Walmart is fair, but I think you'll need something a bit more specialized for cables and such. LBS do have lots of stuff and are also comparatively priced, but you will probably have to talk to a human, so if that's your thing, great, if not...well, bring a friend.

Buy your brake cable housing in bulk rolls, get lined housing. You'll need different housing for indexed shifting. Buy your inner cables in bulk from China on eBay. Buy handlebar tape similarly.
Tires - know your sizes and shop around. Oftern there is a deal on Amazon as well as bike sites like Niagra or Jensen. Only buy tires as good as the rider and the application. Cheap is fine for casual or infrequent use.
Chains - buy on eBay or look for bike site sales. Tubes - go to your LBS, look for periodic sales and stock up. Keep them out of direct sunlight and cool.

I have this craigslist find currently in progress:

Forlorn and forgotten, locked to a post outside of an apartment. Turning in to a thing of beauty that will bring joy to a friend.
I'm really enjoying working on this!
