Skirts on a Bike?
I can't be the only one! How do you do it? I've been knotting them up and using a hair claw clip on the shorter ones to keep them shut. But it is still worrisome when it comes to them getting caught in a wheel or the chain.
Both of my bikes are step through. One has fenders, one doesn't. One has a chain guard. Should I look into fenders for the other? Do they really help? How about a chain guard?
Anyone use a skirt guard? Are they worth the trouble of finding either a pattern or a seller? How about skirt saddles? Anyone have one or have used one? They look a bit like a Schwinn saddle they sell on ebay.

One simple adaptation i.ve seen . with a longer skirt , is tuck the back hem in the front waistband.
Bike: lace cord between the bottom edge of the rear mudguard, and the inside rear apex of the rear triangle, is a traditional way.
a more recycle project .. Coroplast , old political signs .. and fill in the sides to keep skirts out of the rear spokes..
Buy option : Trek Cocoa.

Etsy.com has a bunch of skirt guards. Also +1 on the coroplast signs, that what we used to use for a polo wheel covers.

Coroplast signs?
I must live in the only area without lots of old political signs laying around. Even so, I'd have to paint them! LOL It could be fun. I could put big eye spots al la certain butterfly types on them..
Neat blog. My skirts tend to be rather full so I tie them up. It just isn't very dignified!
I found this here add on chain guard. The bike that doesn't have a chain gaurd also has a drive system in which the chain is almost constantly moving. Shipping would be nearly 40 bucks US..... are there any American makers or sellers of this stuff?

The LBS where I bought my bike had a beautiful Pashley with not only a skirt guard, but internal brakes, gears, completely enclosed chain , a locking mechanism, Brooks saddle, and dynamo powered lights. A very classy ride.

They do, feitsbob, they do. They are just local to the wrong side of the sea for me.
I've spent half my evening reading these blogs and sites. So many ideas.
Now if anyone sees a DIY chain guard for a cruiser type bike (not a slap guard for a mountain bike) I'll be all ears. Have yet to see one. Maybe I could jury rig an old one to fit on a derailer bike...? Anyone try that?

If by 'children' you mean 'cat' then sure, sure.

I try to buy bikes with chain guards and fenders get added almost immediately. I have used skirt guards on both mine and my wife's bikes. I quite often wear longer coats in cold weather. I bought a couple sets of metal skirt guards from Morgan Imports. Apparently all they have left now are the plastic ones. Most of my saddles are Brooks, they make a "ladies" version where the nose is a bit shorter to keep it from catching on your skirt.
My wife loves vintage clothing, especially the 50's style sun dresses. She rides in them quite often on her Raleigh 3 speed.
Chain guards for derailleur bikes are few and far between.
Here is the closest thing you are going to find to a WM valued dutch styled bike. FWIW WM was selling them as was Amazon.

Indeed. I want to go out one of two ways. Heh.
Your wife has good fashion sense.
I love the vintage look myself.
I found Dutch aftermarket chain guards for bikes with derailleurs. So, they do make the things. But the shipping was 50 dollars alone!!
If I found a donor one.. I could use metal snips on it and file it down/repaint. I'm just not sure how to size it. I think it goes by teeth? The bike I'd like to fit one on has a Shimano 52-43 on it. For what it is worth, it's an 85 (I believe) Schwinn World Tourist. I know the bike has little monetary value.. but I'm still restoring it bit by bit to ride. I've read on this forum somewhere that these bikes ride very closely to a Dutch city bike. They rather look the part too; but for the chain guard.
Here she is. Mostly together. Just cleaning up the paint and chrome right now. I don't have tools or know-how to fix wheels and hubs so I have to take her to the shop at some point. I lack a gargage... so I do all the work in the kitchen. Luckily my guy is forgiving of my oddities. All he asks is that I keep repotting plant dirt out of the plates he eats off.. LOL. Bike degreaser though? Doesn't seem to bother him..

And, this one was free! (but for the paint, tools, time and...)

I just don't wear the ankle-length skirts with my bikes, which has fenders but no chain guard. Mid-calf lengths are fine and actually stay down in most of the breezes. It's the skirts just below the knee which behave as poorly as miniskirts. None of the bike-ready skirts are fuller than a half-circle skirt.
I'm not sure what a "skirt saddle" is but from the way I've popped the back seams in the skirt which is too close to being a straight skirt, I can guess. It doesn't take much flare at all to prevent that. All I can say for sure is that the skirt where I measured my stride at the ankle and cut the skirt to fit is the one where the seams pop. The one which doesn't pop is maybe two inches wider at the mid-thigh point of stress, but that's enough.
Skirt guards should be named coat guards. They're nice to have for that job but no help with longer skirts. Maybe someone who wears knee-length skirts more often would disagree.

The bike is looking good! I thought you were looking for a specific chain guard, my bad! Yes, they do make them for derailleurs, my Bianchi has one. (there is a photo of it on my intro post) I don't know if either one of these would work... https://shop.linusbike.com/collection...nus-chainguard

I found these today: https://www.sjscycles.co.uk/hebie-cha...ing-prod19993/
and
https://store.somafab.com/ogkchainguards.html
Just need to figure out the fit. Need to google how that works.
Also, I want this rack:
https://store.somafab.com/newsoderera.html It's perfect looking!
Your bike is lovely. I love that color!
I'm going to say it is like the bike I actually ride and is some sort of comfort/cruiser bike. Mine's a Cruiser 6 Schwinn 100 year edition. It has a chain guard but the tires are really fat and don't fit under the fenders I like, LOL. So eventually I need new tires.. and then some chrome fenders... Tonight I'm trying to tie a string skirt guard using the rack on the back. Oh, this is Susy.... and she lives in my kitchen with her 'brother' my fiance's road bike.
And all those lovely bikes I've been linked in this thread are enough for an honest person to re-consider honesty in the financial sector. Cruel I say, cruel!

These are skirt saddles: https://en.hollandbikeshop.com/bicycl...t-bike-saddle/ Basically wide but no nose. Amazon has something like that bottom one.
I tend to wear flared and long maxi style skirts in cotton and silk. And just tie them around my left knee area. I do have heavier winter skirts that are that length and don't fly. I was just hoping for a better solution.
My winter coat is nearly ankle/mid thigh length. It's the perfect length to stay warm in.

I remembered that there are skirt clips designed not to snag delicate fabrics, but it's still the same basic problem of a solution which might fail.
They still need to be clipped! And those are straight-leg trousers without a hint of flare. A skirt is the hop-on-and-go option for me.

Huh? I dont understand. The context of your comment would seem to suggest that the OP would some how be insulted by my inquiry. If indeed you are correct and the OP is....what...."insulted", by a very logic question concerning her proclivities in cycling apparel. Then why on earth start a puplic discussion?
This simply does not "compute".
Oh yeah, what does your wearing a kilt (whixh I think is cool) have to do with any of this?

The point of riding in a Kilt, skirt or anything else for that matter is, why compromise? If a bike is to be used it needs to be suitable for use with clothes that you normally wear.
