...have you spent recently on bikes/parts? Does it ever stop? I looked at my bank statement and I could of just bought a new bike. I'm constantly refreshing things on my bikes.

id say closer to 2k than id like and the most ive spent at one time was 500.

but ive never had a bike i was satisfied with the set up. one of the down sides of being a college student.

We just found out a baby is on the way and I'm already pricing bike stuff for transporting a kid. Haha

Start watching Craigslist for a bike trailer... :)

Just the usual stuffs that got worn out: chain, cables, bartape, tires, gloves and bib/short. A couple hundred a year is not enough to buy a new bike.

New to me...

Part of my enjoyment is in building up bikes from parts and maintaining them myself, so there are arguments beyond dollars and cents. (I'm still way under what I would have paid to buy 3 brand-new bikes, though. :D)

I have enough parts to put together another bike, just need a frame. I'm hunting an older Raleigh or Schwinn this time for poops and giggles (fixie? maybe?).

I could pull up my financial app for accurate numbers. Without that, I'd say I've probably spent nearly $2,000 on parts, clothing items, and accessories. That's almost twice as much as the cost of my bike itself!

The biggest items I've bought for my bike are the Thule Raceway 3 trunk-mounted bike rack ($240), the Feedback Pro repair stand ($190), and the Shower's Pass Elite 2.1 rain jacket ($250).

I don't even want to add up the total this year alone. It is really high as I just bought a brand new clearance model Felt Tri Bike yesterday which was just under $2500 out the door (including taxes). Along with some HED Wheels a few weeks ago (used but still not cheap) and a used carbon road bike this past winter, it is very high with just those alone. Then there is the bike shorts, shirts, new shoes and various other accessories/bike tools. I might just shat my pants if I look at the actual total (pretty much all of it is paid for except the newest bike which is on a no interest plan and will be paid off come tax return time).

I have to be done for now as my Fiance's car needs work and I offered to front the money for those repairs (and new tires). She will slowly help pay if off as we are working on her being more financially responsible. She is better about not spending money she doesn't have but is bad at saving, period.

The first rule of bike club is you do not talk about how much money you've spent on bike club.

Considering I just got into the hobby in March and started from scratch and have an awful problem of throwing money at hobbies and things I don't really need...let's just say I could have purchased a small car or several small used cars.

Work hard, play hard.

I do plan to stop (for winter) and I maxed out on hiking gear last year. That was another leisure activity I threw money at for two years.

That'll be tough, because if you find yourself on the computer more and on the bike less, you'll be that much more tempted to buy parts and tweak your bikes. At least that's the way it is for me. ;)

Ah..... In 2005 I paid $99 for a mountain bike at Walmart and a $20 bike computer to ride the bike trail with my then 5 year old on training wheels. In July of this year I put $8 in 2 new tubes for the tires, soaked the completely rusted chain with PB Blaster to break it loose and bought a new $20 bike computer from Walmart. I now have 372 miles on it since July 31st. No idea how many miles previous to July since I lost the old bike computer.

So, $148 in 8 years :D

This is a difficult thing to quantify really. There are so many different reasons for bicycling that saying how much someone spends may not be relevant at all to someone else. For me, cycling is a hobby. I buy things not because I need them, but because I want them. I don't worry about the money because if I don't have the extra money to spend on it, I don't. For others cycling is transportation or maybe how they make a living. For those, paying attention to the costs of cycling mean something to them. Just like a car.

I don't want to know but it's been a pretty good chunk the past couple months. However, I don't smoke or gamble and drink VERY little and I'm feeling the mental and physical health benefits of my renewed interest in cycling so it's been a worthwhile investment.

Rowan builds our bicycles, so they're all parts. This year, so far, we haven't spent much ... probably less than $1000. We're sort of taking a little breather between building up 2 new touring bicycles for our Round the World trip last year, and the possibility of getting two new folding bicycles next year. :)

Not much. I bought new panniers last spring, but the old ones were more than 20 years old. Replaced the SPD pedals on my touring bike with pin platforms to make it more useful for city riding, about $80 there. The odd new pair of tires if they wear out. Spent a lot on saddles trying to find one that worked for more than 90 minutes. That ended up being the costliest expenditure, but I finally have two that actually work for me, so it was worth it. I shouldn't need to spend any more for a while now.

I guess everybody sees cycling differently.. not everybody buys race bikes, not everybody commutes to work. Me.. i'd like to do both but "racing" is the one I chose. This year so far with a power meter, wheels, brakes, tires, cassette, bar tape, hudz water bottles I would think it's a pretty penny. At least to me. But on the plus side I quit drinking 3 months ago and smoking a month ago saving myself about 600 bucks... hmmm the math doenst add up thought. that's pennies compared to the bike stuff. Oh well, to each his own.

I've spent about $1,500 over the last 9 months on bike stuff. That includes 3 bicycles. Seems well worth it.

Yeah, I have a nice chunk of change wrapped up in this new hobby. I've also lost 50lbs and my stress/anxiety levels have dropped immensely...as far as I'm concerned, completely worth it.

This post shows that even truly heroic cyclists (like you and Rowan) don't have to spend a lot of money to have some amazing accomplishments. One thing I love about cycling is that you can have a great time whether you spend $100 or $10,000. :)

But to be honest, between the two of us over all the years we've been cycling (for me, it's been 23 years), we've dropped a tremendous amount of money on bicycles, bicycle equipment, bicycle activities, and things related to bicycles. :D It's what we enjoy doing, so we spend less in areas that don't matter as much to us.

Even so, I know people who spend more on bike and gear for Saturday rides than you spend on equipment that takes you across continents.

If only i bought everything at Performance and it was logged on my account.......

I remember a while back seeing over $10,000 at Newegg.com going back to 2005 when I learned how to build a computer.......:lol:

A bunch and I am sure I don't want to really know. I could pull receipts... Nah. I have not bought any complete bikes this year either, which for me is a good thing. :P I would be willing to wager my BIL paid more for a set of tires for his Porsche than I have spent on bicycles in the past 3 years :D and his tires only last a couple of years. ;)

Apparently I have gotten off easy. I bought a new Rans Stratus in 2008. I added a rear rack, and put a trunk pac on that I already owned. The first winter I upgraded to a Sram 7 RD for about $75. I also upgraded the seatback webbing to the new velcro strapping that hold the webbing much tighter. Since then I think I have bought 4 tires and one chain. The bike has about 12,000 miles on it. Other than that just the usual wintertime cleaing and regular maintence.

Granted I take super good care of this bike, and never have ridden in the wet. But as you can see I havent begin to spend anywhere near what some people have spent on their bikes. This has been one of the best bang for the buck purchases I have ever made.

Just this week I've bought 3 saddles, pedals, nuts and bolts, grip tape, flashlight mounts, and possibly new tubes. I also have a folding bike needing attention and haven't spent a dime on it.
