Research chains a little before buying one. Some are hardened and some big ones that are not can be cut by a huge bolt cutter. The large Kryptonite chains are pretty strong. Keep the chain and the lock high and wrapped so one can not get a link on the ground. If a link can be put on the ground a huge bolt cutter and all one's body weight pushing the bolt cutter handle down against the ground can cut many chains.

Congratulations on saving both bikes and hopefully convincing the perpetrator to take up a different profession (after he gets out of jail).

Wish more stores would install some video security for the bike rack area - too often it's around the corner and out of sight where bike thieves figure they won't get caught. Glad this one figured wrong.

I'm sorry but you deserved to have it stolen, even POS bikes around here have U-Locks, the hipsters attach them to their paints! That thief must have thought it was Christmas morning.

Buena Park isn't exactly the nicest part of the OC...... like someone said I would have walked inside with it, if they have a problem shop somewhere else!! I once saw a kid with a red Cannondale road bike walking around a mall I was like "that'll work!" there's really no difference between the rubber of the tires and our shoes, if the bike is clean, if someone has a problem tell um to shove it.

I didn't lock it at Walmart.

I locked the bike to the bike rack, in front of 24hr fitness. From there, I walked to Walmart.

I deserve to have my bike stolen? LOL. Okay.

If that thief thought that day was Christmas, he might want to think again next time he's lurking about looking for a bike.

You're right though, I should have just used my U-lock; which I did today.

I don't have anything negative to say about Buena Park. I certainly don't think it's a rough area by any means. There's sharks in the water, no matter where you go.

Jane and I ride $5000 - $6000 worth of bikes between us. Abhoring the additional weight, we never lock them to anything. Instead, we just lean them on a tree or a light pole and take turns keeping them in sight. Touch wood - never a problem in 4 years. I always smile at the $300 bikes with U-locks, while ours rest unsecured. And they probably laugh at us, leaving our bikes loose. To each his/her own. . .

Must be nice... I travel solo much of the time and unfortunately cloning hasn't worked out too well... yet. I ride middle of the road expensive to complete beater bikes. One is an ugly old Raleigh 3 speed from 1971, complete with rusty handlebars and rims. It gets locked with a NY Fahgettaboudit chain. Mainly because I want to ride home, not walk or have to find a ride.

For the most part, that's correct. I also and often ride solo. I ride into the local coffee shop and lean the bike against the wall outside. Along with maybe 20 other bikes, many of them more expensive than mine.

None of them locked to anything.

Like everyone else, I go inside and order, and perhaps use the restroom. During that brief period the bike is out of my sight. But I think there's a silent sorting and cataloging going on out there. I know I do it . . . that is, marking the appearance of each newly-arriving cyclist, then matching them to their bike. So there's that.

Or maybe it's just that tennis shoes don't work well with Speedplays . . .

I remember reading an angry victim's post on stolenbicycleregistry. He left his bike unlocked by the window outside a restaurant or coffee shop. He sat inside next to the window and just watched his bike being taken. He ran out to chase and yell, but the thief got away. You could be safe for 365x days but for one lucky thief.

I saw a dude in the cafe at Whole Foods once who was keeping an eye on his bike through the window. Thing is,the cafe is on the second level,and the bike was out in the parking garage. If someone would've grabbed it,he would've had to have run down a flight of steps,out into the garage,then up another flight of steps to get to where the bike was parked. And the thief would've had either an exit ramp or stairwell on the other side they could've used where he never would've gotten close to them. I don't believe anyone deserves to have a bike stolen,but my condolences for this guy would've been minimal.

Ohhh yes, do not be mistaken world, us cyclists have a passion for our "whips" and our hard-earned lifestyles. */#%;! you bike thieves!!!
