How many bikes do you own?
What are they?
What is their main purpose, i.e. beater-bike, commuter, racing, etc?

I have two:
1. Masi Fixed Uno Drop - Commuting
2. Frankenstein of random parts - commuter/beater and all-around perpetual project

I was once asked that question at a party. I was considering how to answer it: Does a bare frame count? If I have all the parts but they aren't assembled should that count? Then my wife jumped in "He has 8 bicycles." As we were standing there I wondered which ones she didn't know about.

My main rides today are the Rans short wheelbase recumbent in my avatar and my Marin beater bike. I also own a Hase tricycle that I can hitch to Mrs. Grouch's as a tandem, a recently rebuilt but so far unriden Porsche mountain bike, a Bridgestone road bike and a Raleigh fixed gear bike. None are factory original and I basically ride as an excuse for creating and modifying more bikes. Which one I might ride on a given day depends on my whim and who I plan to ride with.

I have 5 right now:

1. Rivendell Road - commuting, light touring, maybe heavy touring? (experimenting with racks/bags)
2. Giordana XL-Eco - fast riding, occasional commutes
3. Cannondale F400 - off road trail riding
4. Schwinn KOM-10 - commuter, beater, winter bike (with studs)
5. Schwinn Speedster 3-spd - on loan, for sale when I get it back

The three bikes I commute on all have Brooks saddles, so I can attach a traditional saddlebag to hold my commute stuff. The KOM-10 and the Rivendell both have front baskets, too.

I may be looking for an N+1 for loaded touring, if loading up the Rivendell with 40-50 lbs doesn't feel right.

Mercier Elle - used for everything
Schwinn cruiser bike (Walmart bike) - she used to use it for commuting until she got the Elle. Now it just takes up space.

I have 10. Why, no good reason.

6. Bianchi Vigorelli SRAM Apex New, haven't ridden yet. another ebay deal almost $700 less than msrp 2012 model

10. Scott CS Comp 105/Tiagra mix bought from a buddies brother, virtually new for $800 less than msrp.

Why? Because life is too short to not do what you love to do. I've only ever ridden one women, so I am compensating my riding many bikes.

Rowan and I have 15 or 16 (I'd have to dig out the spreadsheet) ... and why? Because we can. :)

1 fast road bike - Because I need all the help I get.
1 cyclocross/trail bike - Because I'm a glutton for punishment.
1 touring bike - Because bike touring looks awesome!!! But, I probably wont have the time to do it until I retire in 20 years.
1 fixed gear - I'm a minimalist. Purity dude.
1 mountain bike - I don't know,,, It's heavy,,, I have the cross bike,,, I'm selling it.

Wowzers you guys have a lot of bikes! I've got just the two:

Franken-MTB which was originally for commuting and now is on trail duty with a brand new 9 speed drivetrain, and the Gravity Liberty 3 that I've been commuting/going on recreational road rides on since last summer. I've been itching to buy me an old cromo 10 speed for some reason, but have yet to have one catch my eye that's also the right size.

About 200! I have a large Moto "collection". I am a big fan of mixtes! Got a bunch! I have been acquiring older MTBs...hardtails, non suspension stuff. I'm always running into vintage English bikes! C'dales! Love'm! Got'm! I've given a lot away! I've got Univegas, Puchs, Fujis, Schwinns, and a small amount of Bianchis! Etc. Love the etc.s! I'm going to blow a bunch this spring/summer! riding more than wrenching now! Oh! Yeah! Got a few Miyatas, too! Too much fun! I have a few newer Treks...1100s, 1200s a 1400. I love to grab 1/2 dozen or so with grandkids and just ride each one and get off on the differences! I know1 Too many!
No tandems! Yet!

Right now I have one, a 2004 Giant Cypress DX, a hybrid. It's my commuter and my weekend recreational bike. I have another on order, a 2014 Achielle Craighton Pure Oma. That one will become my commuter and the Giant will return to its pre-fender days as a bike purely for weekend fun. One day I hope to have a third bike, a folder.

One short wheelbase recumbent - RANS V-Rex - for commuting and general riding.
One long wheelbase recumbent - RANS V3 - for general riding.
One recumbent tandem - RANS Screamer - for riding with my favorite stoker.
One Novara Big Buzz hybrid hanging in a corner of the garage reminding me that I didn't always ride recumbents.

Why? Because riding bikes is fun.

I own 4 bikes.

1. 2013 Brompton S6L-X folding bike. Used for commuting and travelling.
2. 2013 Citizen Tokyo folding bike. Had to get this when I scheduled an
international flight and realized Jetblue Airways won't take my Brompton
in a cardboard box. This fits in a standard suitcase with some disassembly.
3. 2013 Scott CR1 Pro roadbike. Really wanted to get a 2014 Himod Synapse
but couldn't wait anymore. I normally use my roadbike for commuting, long
club rides and charity century rides. Not completely happy with the geometry.
4. 2012 (NOS) Kestrel RT1000 SL. Still sitting inside a box, unopened. Hoping
the endurance geometry will be better than my Scott; if it is - will sell the CR1.

I now have 4, each serving a different purpose.

1) Raleigh Hybrid - Used for my 5 mile commute when I feel up to it or any kind of road or bike path riding.

2) GT Mountiain Bike - Used for trails

3) Walmart Mountain Bike - My 15 year old bike that I used very sparingly until I got into better bikes 2.5 years ago. It's only used around the neighborhood when I want to take my pup in the dog trailer.

4) Motobecane Fat Bike - My newest purchase which I plan to use for beach riding.

Each bike really does serve it's own distinct purpose.

Thirty plus... and just bought tw... three more. :innocent: Most of mine are vintage, many are Raleighs, most are IGH. I also have a touring bike, expedition bike and several folders. I enjoy working on the bikes as well as riding them. Currently the ones getting the most mileage are my Redline R530 city bike and my Dahon Classic 3 folder.

1) Custom steel frame road bike with Ultegra and hand built wheels. Summer riding, reasonably fast.
2) Aluminum cross bike with Tiagra. Winter with conti winter tires. Gravel with clement mso tires.
3) Steel Masi frame I built up with mix of shimano components. Touring.
4) Dual suspension mtn bike.

would like: fat bike for winter trail riding, foldie for traveling.

I have 3 bikes currently. Once I get a house and IF I have money left over, I'm getting a disc-brake hybrid bike for foul weather. Currently trying to schedule a walk-through at a house that is 10 miles closer to work. I'd then have space to put my bikes. ha!

As long as you use them, having multiple bikes is great.

We have 5. I use two and am about to buy a third. Sad part is we just started riding in February. As you ride you see other types of riding you would like to pursure. Different bikes do things better. It wouldn't be called an addiction if we could resist the n+1 conundrum.
