I wrapped mine in bubble wrap and tape. Doesn't break easily and with tape directly on the glass bottle if it ever break it won't spread everywhere.

Just for the record, it's not only plastic water bottles we should be worried about. We should also be concerned about plastic food containers (like what you get at restaurants), egg cartons, etc...

I use a Nalgene BPA free bike bottle....it has a clear lid on it, protecting the portion where your mouth goes from dirt and debris.

I really like my Brita bottle with a filter in the spout. I'm surprised no one has mentioned these. They are fantastic. Cost about $10 and the filters are replaceable.

The Camelback that I own is more than a decade old. I received it as a gift from my sister-in-law. It has been in my closet for all of that time, very rarely used. I would almost bet that if I filled it with water and took it on a hike that it would still be leaching that horrid taste from the tube that leads from the reservoir to your mouth. It gets very hot where I live and that facilitates the transfer of the plasticizers to the water. I have taken new "food grade" tubing out of boxes that were at least as old as my Camelback and immediately you can smell the odor. Camelbacks don't work well on most recumbents as they were intended to be worn on your back. The seatback is in the way. I can carry enough water in recycled Gatorade bottles to satisfy my needs so why bother to rig up a way to carry something I don't care to use?
