Recumbent rider here, and I wear both padded and unpadded shorts. The unpadded ones are used with underwear. I've found that what works best is lycra boxers. Even my coolmax briefs can occasionally chafe but I've never had a problem with the lycra boxers. There can be two layers of lycra between the 'boys' and my inner thigh; so they're free to rub together to save my skin from doing the same. Padding rarely causes problems, but once in a while a cheap pad can be worse than no pad; at which point the pad comes out.

... now I've got a small section of broken skin on my right side about an inch long that hurts like heck.
Fast forward to this weekend. A bunch of us are riding in the 24 Hours in the Canyon (Palo Duro Canyon, TX) and I've got this danged sore spot. We can ride the 10 mile road and dirt loops whenever we want, so it's not a continuous thing. Been sleeping commando for two nights and put zinc oxide on it the first day at work and neosporin on it today. Any suggestions on how the heck I'm gonna ride without making it worse? Put some neosporin with pain killer on it, load up with Bag Balm and go for it?

So how did the ride go?

It went well. As well as an overweight, mid 40's Guy could make it in the upper 90 degree heat. I just put some neosporin and bag balm on liberally and made sure my bibs were sitting snug. Nothing fortunately got worse and I was able to put a few laps in and participate. Thank you to everyone for all the advice.

KY or other water based lube works better than any oil-based (petrolateum) ointment to prevent chafing. Sweat keeps the lube hydrated, it doesn't damage the expensive gel padding in your shorts, washes off in the shower, and doesn't promote the growth of anaerobic bugs on your skin. Silicone based body lubes may be ok on skin--I don't know from a cycling aspect--but they may well damage the padding in shorts. YMMV.
