I just look at the Trek's site and noticed "S" series bikes. What is Trek doing now? There are so many choices in FX!

Appears Trek is feeling the heat from Specialized Sirrus line. There is now a 2017 carbon frame Sirrus with disc brakes for US $1300 MSRP. Trek has been dragging their feet on disc brakes, and IMHO it is hurting them. Allot of "hybrids" get used for commuting type applications, and that is exactly where many people want disc brakes due to potential weather problems. Add to that, many people (varies with the individual) see disc brakes as "better", and therefore have seen the lack thereof on Trek bikes as a negative. Until now they have not offered a disc carbon hybrid, even on their most pricey hybrid which IMHO was ridiculously overpriced, and still is with their $300 price cut.

I took my wife's 7.3 fx out today. it still has the ridiculous looking but ridiculously comfortable riser stem on it. it's great for a non-time trialed trip around town :) i am 6'1" and my back is perfectly upright with this setup. put about 8 miles on it today.

The top of the line FX is already discounted $400. It just came out 2 weeks ago.

Are you referring to the 7.9? The 7.9 is last year's model. Trek is supposed to discontinue the 7.X FX series in favor of the new line of FX 3, FX S 4, etc.

Hello all! True newbie here but I want to thank you all so much for your insight and advice. I have been "lurking" the board since I started riding my "new" (used but modified) department store bike since Father's Day. Thanks to your advice, I learned what type of bike I need to look for and what I could realistically expect in my price range. Most importantly, I learned the value of a LBS.

Well, based on everything I read here, and the 2 stores within a 75 mile radius of my house, I narrowed my choices down to a 2017 Giant Escape 2 and 2016 Trek 7.2 FX. Earlier this week I made the decision to ride them both and take the plunge. They no longer has the 2016 7.2 FX in my size but they gave me the 2017 for the 2016 closeout price. They had seen me in the store, asking questions, and decided to hook me up because they did not have my size in the 2016!

So....I finally have my first real bike!!!! 2017 FX2 Matte Black. Again, thank you all and I look forward to many miles behind me. :):):):):):)

Congrats on the new ride!! Will you be commuting or is this just to workout with? And what - if anything - are you doing to the bike in terms of mods...?

The more I ride my 7.4, the more I like it. Not a fan of the Nebula saddle, changed it out for an SR. Finally got my saddle height right for me. I'm 5'11 and opted for the 20" frame. I can take it off road (moderately) and still keep up with the road guys on our weekly runs. Also makes for a solid commuter/grocery getter. My wife is 4'11, got her a 13" 7.4. We are happy campers.

So? You gotta new bike er what?

I did! Thanks for following up. I got the FX3. I have only gone on one 20 mi ride and a few shorter stints. Will be really testing out next two weeks. I like it, but am sad I couldn't find 7.4 in my size anywhere. It did just feel better, for some reason. Maybe its just in my head. I'm such a newbie, i really wonder how on earth I could tell the difference!

Hi all I've been a long time looker but decided to join after coming across this thread. I just sold my 14 year old Kona (which was too short for me anyways) in favor of a 2016 FX 7.2, basically only 25 inch frame I liked. I'm a little tall at 6'4" so it was paramount for me to have a large bike.
Anyways been commuting to work at least two days a week a little over 7 miles each way. It's been a blast. I recently put on bontrager fenders in preparation for the rainy season. So if you're wondering what a FX bike looks like with bontrager Interchange rack and fenders here you go.

I hear the complaints about the nebula saddle(which are completely warranted) and decided to get a brooks saddle cambium. Had it on my FX 7.3 for a little less than a year and it was definitely worth it. I love this saddle, but you all know how subjective fit can be so do yourself a favor and get rid of that nebula saddle. Get anything else, you will enjoy the ride tremendously.

The Nebula is my Goldilocks saddle. The stock is too cushy and shaped wrong for long rides. Tried a couple of aggressive race saddles which were too far to the opposite side of the spectrum.

$1300 was my price point, and I studied the Trek line - bought my less-demanding wife a 7.2 the week before I purchased my sirrus sport carbon, as I do like Trek bikes - but found their offerings in my range lacking.

Disc brakes ARE better IMO than v-brakes, and a comparison of the components between the manufacturers were quite favorable for the '17s from Specialized. Given the strong competition in the industry (if only it existed in cable TV and cell carriers... :( ) I've no doubt Trek will be producing better offerings in short order.

Just bought a amazingly superb bright green 7.3 - just wondering what is the easiest way of bringing down the weight of the bike

new wheels would be the biggest change to weight if you keep the same frame/fork but that's a costly upgrade (depends on how crazy you go...). you can do a set of upgrades like carbon seatpost, handle bar or lighter saddle but these upgrades alone will probably cost you more $ than you paid for the bike.
