Trek Verve 1: What's The Bottom Bracket?

Looking for info. Internet searches proving elusive.

2013 Trek Verve 1. Sealed bottom bracket 68mm. Square taper. Almost undoubtedly Shimano (haven't had it out yet, waiting for tool).

1900 miles on it. Sounds unhappy.

Can anyone tell me what the stock part # is for this bad boy? Or a better and compatible option? Any and all suggestions appreciated.

The one I took out of my fiance's Trek Neko was a VP brand bottom bracket. If you go with a Shimano Square Taper Bottom Bracket UN55 68 - 113 mm that should be fine. Or this one Shimano BB-UN26 Square taper Bottom Bracket.

At that price point its going to be a basic square taper, so basically take your pick for the replacement. The Shimano ones should hold up.

For what it's worth, my 2008 Trek Soho also came with a VP bottom bracket. Based on a sample of two (me and jase33), Trek seems to be using a lot of those.

I have managed to take apart a basic Shimano square taper cartridge BB on another bike and service the bearings myself, instead of replacing the whole thing. The VP on my Trek proved to be too well sealed for that, at least with my skills.

Thanks for the replies. Decided to replace crank as well so I'll homework a corresponding BB. Just found it odd that in all the detailed spec info out there, I couldn't find one bit of info on the stock bb besides "sealed cartridge, unspecified." Unless if it's VP they didn't want to specify or something. Whatevahhh.

I suspect they may not want to put a specific BB in writing for the purposes of flexibility in these low-end bikes, i.e. to keep the liberty of installing whatever batch of BBs they happen to have available at a low cost without tinkering with the website or brochures.

If they don't mention it, its not a Shimano. Shimano square taper BBs are pretty great, and BBs/headset/hubs are the first place where brands save money.

Got it out. It's a VP-BC55 (68, 122.5). And it has spun its last spin.

Have a Shimano BB-UN55 on the way. Plus a new crank to go with the recently replaced chain and freewheel. She's no speed demon but I'd like another 2K out of her before I go full Surly LHT.

They don't always mention Shimano BBs either, and in this case I'd say VP is a reputable brand and there's no difference in price either at the low end.

Looked up the current LHT specs, and incidentally, the complete bike comes with a UN55 I guess Surly wasn't making a speed demon either, but went for maintainability in all kinds of locations.

Here's the video on servicing the bearings in a low-end Shimano cartridge BB. I was able to do this with one BB that wasn't UN55. May or may not be possible with that model.
