Since hybrid bicycles are essentially sold as urban commuters and recreational bicycles I was thinking the forum name might be changed to reflect that so it also includes other urban bicycles like the city bike that get used for the same purposes.

This would expand the forum to include a very similar bicycle, create some cross traffic between different users, and make for some interesting discussions.

I think this is a good idea. We have hybrids but my next bike will possibly be a Pashley Sovereign which is a English City bike (as 65'er had mentioned in another post) I actually still consider them a hybrid as opposed to a cruiser (which in my mind is more a bike on the beach kind of bike, like the low-riders of the bike world

However I have a feel that the majority of the hybrid readers on BF will disagree.

I disagree. This forum is not even a week old yet and someone is wanting to change it. Just my opinion.

I dont think he wants to change the group but have it encompass bikes that are hybrids/city/commuter bikes other than ones that look like say my Globe City.

If I read hybrid I think just my Globe City but if I read say "Hybrids & City Bikes" then I know I could post about my Hybrid or about my possibly Purchased Pashley bike which I actually do consider in the hybrid family.

As and aside, I am wondering anyways for those of our members that are in Europe..Do you call them hybrids or City Bikes or both or do you differentiate depending on the look?

I think the name "hybrid" includes all that. But you are right that "hybrid" may-be called something different depending on where you are from. However I think everyone can figure it out. I guess it doesn't really matter to me one way or another.

Well I hope you weren't referring to me because I have a hybrid thank you very much ...I consider the commuters forum to be "about" commuting and the recreational forum for families that bike together

Hybrid does include this. A hybrid does not necessarily mean it's an 'urban' bike, though an 'urban' bike may be a hybrid. Leave it alone.

Maybe not change the name of the group per se but add to the description because if I was a total newbie with a European style hybrid/city/commuter bike I for one would not not what forum to post in

"Where else would you go to discuss these fun, versatile bikes?"

This is the part I meant...Keep the Hybrid Forum name though

Be happy that we've now got a hybrid forum.

I think it's all inclusive and no name change is needed.

I have been riding my hybrid in the parade the whole time and would actually like to see more people in it... I like big parades.

I think that people who ride city bikes and hybrids would have a lot in common and in some cases they are categorized together because of what they are designed to do. They seem to go together like peanut butter and bananas.

It think it would add a richness to this forum and it seems ironic that a group of people who were so vocal about being excluded would dismiss this idea so quickly.

Aren't city bikes designed exclusively for pavement riding?

The last few years, seems the city bikes are marketed painted black.

In Europe a Hybrid is a Hybrid and a citybike is a Citybike.

Depends what you call a citybike. Some say citybike about something much like a Hybrid or a 26" MTB.

The "Dutch" citybikes are the old style designed before the paved roads and therefor has fat tires and sprung saddels.

This is an urban bike.

Please leave the forum as is. When this gets to be "city bike" and "dutch bike" central, I'm out.

See to me (with my still untrained eyes) that looks like a hybrid to me. What makes it a urban as opposed to a hybrid ? My Globe kinda looks like it , is my globe considered an ubran or hybrid ? Have I've been hanging with the wrong crowd?

They are two different classes of bikes, both in common conversation and in marketing. The city/urban/relaxed/simple bike is the traditional class of bikes. This class is of course way, way older than the hybrid class.

With as few city bikes as I have seen, I don't think the forum will be flooded with that type of volume outside of "true hybrids" however we each individually choose to define the term.

I don't think it does us any good to cleanse the list of city bike references... After all they are ridden on the road, and aren't true road bikes.

We should try to be inclusive. Also, like any other forum, we are all free to not open the threads we aren't interested in.

The bike world is fluid and always changing, anyway. For instance, mixtes are much more popular now than just a couple of years ago when I bought mine. I can see that happening with city/urban bikes.

I've no problem with including city bikes or other similar type bikes, but I don't think we need to change the title of the forum.

I vote to rename it the City Bike Forum. There isn't a term that encompasses bikes for use in the countryside as well as the city so it will have to do.

I would not want to see a name change but I think it would be perfectly reasonable to add these bikes to the description under the forum name. Regardless of if these bicycles are coined as Hybrids it is clear they have influenced the hybrid concept.
