2010 Rapid 1 Stem: Is it Special?

2010 Rapid 1 Stem: Is it Special?
Is there anything extra special about the stem configuration on the Rapid 1?
When a friend, with whom I cycle to work occasionally, told me last week that he just replaced his sporty mtb with a Giant 2010 Rapid 1, I was excited. When he told me where he bought it, I was careful to hide my disappointment. Another friend who purchased a Giant at this particular lbs a couple of years ago has had some not-so-good experience there as have I. Sure enough, when I asked if they sized him up, he said that any stem changeout would require a special 'kit?'
Is the retailer just stringing my buddy along or is the Rapid 1 stem special?
