Bike shop sold me 2009 7.3 fx instead of 2010 7.3 fx, should i care?
I test rode a blue 7.3 FX on April 23rd 2010. I'm pretty sure the blue made it a 2010 model? Anyway, I told them I wanted a black one, so they had to order one. I paid full msrp $640 plus tax, since every dealer around said they dont negotiate on new models. So six days later i get an email saying the bikes ready, I call, then go pick it up. I love the bike.
Long story short, I didnt realize till now it's a 2009 model. The parts are 2009 and the email listed my bike with 09 at the end. I still havent gone in for my free tune up. (The store is a long, long drive, and he said wait 2 months if i ride every other day, but ive been riding every day).
So, should I care that its a 2009? Does it make a difference that they ordered it? If anything I'd want some store credit back.

i think that you should care. every bike store i called looking for a certain model made sure to specifically tell me that they only had the 2009. in my case, the 2009 and 2010 models of the gary fisher kaitai had different components, and most stores gave discounts on the older models from msrp, though one was not into that.

Other than color - the only difference appears to be the front derailleur. 2009 = Matte Black, C102 Front Derailleur. 2010 = Titanite Black, M191 Front Derailleur...
On the 2010, the chain guard (on the chain rings) says "Hyperdrive" on it, and is stylized.
Which color do you like best?
There is no "Metallic Black" listed.... they probably did that to cover their tails....

oh to add to what i said. the 2009 kaitai was 749. the 2010 was 599. all the major components were better on the 09. 2 shops told me they would sell me the 09 for 600-650. the shop closest to me said no discount, but when i went and said look, id rather buy here than drive 40 minutes but for that much money i would have to do it. so they ended up selling it to me for 650 cash with a new seat and some accessories. so really, yeah, them not telling you it was 2009 has definitely potentially screwed you out of a discount, as you could have shopped for a 2009 clearance deal if you had known.

I didnt really see any black 2010's so I don't know if i'd care. I like my bike I just hate being ripped off. I'm going to call them tomorrow but I don't know what I can really ask for. I need a floor pump, maybe I could get them to store credit me one?

Both the 09 and 10 are Trek' Alpha Black grade of aluminum, so the frame is probably the same. I don't know the differences about the component spec between 09 and 10 but you have a legitimate beef there if there are any differences. Also you have a beef because 09 models are typically discounted by up to about 30% by now.......

Well I called and the guy there seemed pretty surprised by it. He gave me some whole story about maybe Trek had some leftovers and send them one by mistake... I dont know but he seemed helpful. He said he would talk to the Trek rep about it when he shows up next week.

My recent experiance with a Giant dealer was the 09 leftovers were discounted. Funny thing is that even with the discount, the diff was only 10bucks more for a 2010. But he explained that the 2010 had the components slightly degraded to bring the price down. It would seem that sometimes older is better but you should be told what you are getting.

Compare the components. Keep or exchange for the one that has better stuff.
I know in general Kona really cheapened out with components for 2010 vs. 2009.

Crank changed because Shimano phased out the 09 crank in favor of the one found on the 10. We needed to warranty an 09 crank which had too much runout and received the updated crank instead of an identical replacement crank.
09 was marketed as "Metallic Black"; 10 is marketed as "Titanite Black." What's the difference? I have no idea.
When a bike is substantially the same from one year to the next, especially if the paint is the same and most components haven't changed, manufacturers and retailers call it a "carry-over" model and might not discount the previous year. If there are obvious changes, like paint or major components, they might discount the previous year's model. Trek Allants, Gary Fisher Simple Citys--some of the FX and 7000 line of bikes are definitely carry-over models.
If this is the case, if this is a carry-over model with few changes from the previous year, why should a dealer be expected to discount it?

Just go back to my post, where I listed the differences between the two years. Front deRailleur, and stylized chain guard. You can get a good look at both of them on Bikepedia.com
edit: keep in mind, that, the 2010s were made in 2009, for the beginning of the production year, which may be causing some confusion.
The difference in color should be obvious, as one sounds to be "matte" in finish, the other(2010 titanite) sounds like it may be glossy or metallic.

if you ordered and paid for "10" then you should have gotten it, carry over or not. I would demand my 10 or they should give a discount on the 09. Now that I read this, tomorrow I am going to check mine to see what year they gave me.

Well the bike has a C101 Front derailleur instead of C102 or M191... the chain cover says Hyperdrive. The bikepedia is wrong there was no Matte black for 2009 7.3. My bike is metallic but so is 2009. This is annoying.
EDIT: I called Trek and the guy there said the bikes are identical. He said the diff between C101 and C102 is the location of the clamp, otherwise the same, and the Metallic Black is the same as Titanite Black. And apparently theres some kind of white 7.3 available?? Whatever. I'm gonna go ride.
