Where are you getting you information? Down hill speeds are in the low 30's, straight sprints I've hit over 24 without a doubt, and 15-20 isn't unreasonable as it's a flat bar road bike, and not just a typical hybrid. Factor that in and maybe it isn't as unreasonable as you'd think. And I'm located in south Florida so it's very flat, and the 'hills' are just bridges with steep inclines.
There's definitely a chance I'm wrong. It was not in kmph, that's for sure. The data that I provided wasn't meant to be used as factual evidence, it was just an estimate based on multiple factors.

15-20 is NOT an average speed...It's either 15 OR 20. If it's so flat - how come your downhill speed is in low 30's? "Straight sprints" don't last 10 or 20 miles... All I'm trying to say it's way off, especially now when I know what bike was it. Oh...BTW...My friend bought a fancy bike computer. Her speed/average speed was way off from my calculations, and from what my Garmin was showing. There was always 2-3 miles difference....Is that the case with you? NVM...Enjoy your riding. It's not really important what the average speed is. If it's fun - it's all that should count.

Between 16 and 17 mph (for about 20ish miles). For 40 miles its around 13-14. I bike not to race or earn sponsorships or accolades or to memorize every single brand and part ever made, but just for exercise. Biking is very low-impact so saves knees and doesnt give me shin splints (as running can/does), so I can exercise longer each day and enjoy the outdoors. For this reason, I try not to care about my speed at all -- I just bike. Having said that, it does feel better when I see a higher speed as I do not try and push or attack so higher speeds mean I'm getting in better shape. It all depends on your mentality; do what you do and enjoy it!

Funny that over in the 41 they are arguing about why average speed doesn't matter while average speed seems to be a concept that is embraced by most other cyclists.
I rode 124 km yesterday on a non hybrid (Moulten)... the average speed with some really long shallow climbs, wind, and rain was 25 kmh with our return being faster due to more long descents and neutral wind over the last 50km.
I did have to slow down a lot to let my companions catch up as this was a social ride and not a race... one of the riders did have a conventional hybrid and he suffered on the outbound leg of the ride because of the wind and my other riding partner was on a recumbent trike which cheats the wind like nothing else but suffers on those longer climbs.

Up to 20 miles i tend to do about 17 to 18ish. The 50 mile runs drop into the 16 range as I get closer to home. But I'm old and fat, so it's cool.

I started keeping track of my mileage on April 18th with a goal of 2K miles. So far I'm at 3715.79 Miles in 253.42 Hours. That puts my average speed at 14.66 mph on my 91 Schwinn Crosscut with 700 x 35 Schwalbe Marathon Supremes.

I keep track of average speed using distance/time pedaling. It's one way that I can know if I am improving. I don't count the time stopped at traffic lights, railroad crossings, etc.
My average speed on my Bianchi Advantage, circa 1995, is 26-27km/h on my commute. My average speed on my Giant Rapid 2 is a tad faster at around 28km/h on a 100km ride. I'd like to hit 30km/h on one of the longer rides someday.

When I'm not hitting a nice high cut into the fairway at 385, I am usually in the 16's (when the weather was a nice 70 with no humidity i was 17's) with fairly flat terrain (top speed of 23-25mph). Personally, I dont give one F how fast I go; my goal is fitness so as long as i get my miles in I'm fine with that. Using the Strava app, I will occasionally push a bit during 'segments' to see where I compare with other Strava app users. I figure it's a nice way to have a little competitive spirit for 4 miles out of my rides (only when I feel like pushing). Others here may race and get all bent out of shape over a few grams of weight for a specific component, but for me it's simply a way to get in shape that isnt as awful (and knee-damaging and/or shin splint-causing) as running. Either way, ride how you ride and enjoy it!

I average about 12.5mph on flat ground. I ride a converted steel mountain bike, with the rack and everything fixed to the bike about 30lbs, then add my one pannier and saddle bag is another 15 lbs. I'm not aerodynamic at all though sitting a little more upright and I don't wear the spandex when I ride, plus the pannier sticks out a bit.
That average speed is over 20 miles, once past that I start to slow down a little bit. I'm a bit of sleeper lol, put me on something light and aero I take off lol.

30.2 miles today and with the darn bridges I averaged 17.3. Bridges are a mile wide. Rested my legs for a day and a half but still felt kind of weak kneeed for some reason. Bloody hot today.

I'm sure somebody else also wrote this earlier but avg speed is affected by many factors. terrain and road, wind, number of stops/crossings, weather are external factors, bike weight, clip in pedals, position on bike, tire width, type, pressure are bike related factors, then it comes to rider abilities. endurance, strength, solo ride vs group ride etc.
I always want to see how the same rider average on different bikes. For instance, we know pro road bikers average +27-28 mph on flats on long rides, and their time trial averages can exceed 32 mph on a short ride. what can they do on a hybrid or even a mountain bike on the same terrain? then we would know what the upper limit for a hybrid can be.
my personal best is 17.5mph for 1 hr ride that is hilly and requires ~25 road crossings that I need to slow down if not stop. longer side ~16mph for +50mile rides again hilly and never counted how many times I needed to slow down on traffic. I wish I could rent a nascar circuit to test my best on flat.
