Looking for a new Hybrid!
Hi,
My name is Scott and I'm a graduate student in Chicago. I originally moved here from Central Missouri, where I mostly rode gravel and paved city trails (KATY trail). When I moved to Chicago I had my bike stolen last year and am in the process of looking for a new hybrid to hit the trail with this spring.
I had a Gary Fisher Librano (SP?) hybrid which I had quite a bit of trouble with broken spokes. I am looking more at Trek or Giant now.
I am a hefty fellow (290 lbs) and try to ride quite often and am working on losing weight. I need a bike that can handle my weight but doesn't feel like I'm pedaling a monster truck. I am in the $7-800 dollar price range and wondering what a good model to look at would be. I will also definitely be investing in a Kryptonite lock as well, lol.
Any questions or info would be appreciated. Thanks! Glad to be a part of the forum.

IMO an important factor for you to consider is brakes - you have more mass to get stopped than average. Be sure to test ride at least one model with hydraulically actuated disc brakes, do some test emergency stops and compare the results with traditional rim brakes. I'm not as big as you (210), but once I did that the only models I considered had disc brakes.
Having said that, consider the Specialized Crosstrail Sport Disc which is aluminum framed, comes in up to XXL size (I believe), has a lock-outable front suspension fork for on or off pavement with load settings for size of rider, and comes stock with 45mm tires (you can always go narrower later if you wish).
I'm sure Trek or Giant have similar models, but I'm not as familiar with those as the Specialized because that's what I bought.
Also, you might peruse posts in the 'Clydesdales' forum, which is where larger folk discuss larger issues.
