Frame size
#1
Hello again
6'2" with a 34" inseam and trying to decide if a 20 or 22.5 Trek frame is the one I'd be happiest with. I've briefly ridden both and currently have a 20" Schwinn which seems OK, but I have nothing to really compare it to. Standing over a 22.5 frame is pretty dang tight in the crotch area, but I do have an inch or so there. I think my bigger concern is would I be more comfortable over time with the longer seat to handlebar distance of the larger frame. I would really appreciate y'alls insight and experience into what should be my best choice. I would really like to make the right choice before spending a wad on my next bike and then finding out I really should have gone to the other frame size. If only they made a 21 or 21.5, I think that'd be perfect

Based on what I've learned in my short tenure on this forum (I had a similar thread) you'd be better off with the larger one. I'm 6'0 and just purchased a "Large" Sirrus Sport (I believe it's 20.5"). I was concerned with standover height cause there was only an inch but everyone assured me that was fine. Being that you have an extra couple inches on me and that you said you can standover the 22" with an inch to spare, I'm thinking the 22' would be better. But I'm also a noobie and just basing my answer off what I THINK the more experienced users on this forum will tell you. Although they'll most likely just tell you to ride both and see which feels more "comfortable".

Yes, it is a shame the jump between sizes is so big. I agree the best fit for you would probably be between 20 and 22.5.
The height changes more than the length when you go up a size so generally a larger size will put you in a more upright position. Which Trek are you looking at? If you are comfortable on a 20" Schwinn, you might prefer the same size Trek. If you want to sit a little more upright the 22.5" might suit you better.
I'm 6'1" and ride 20.5" hybrid, 19" MTB. I think if I was your size the 22.5" would be better for me, but we're all different. Try them on and see which fits. Changing a seatpost or stem to fine tune the fit is not unusual.

I'm looking for a 7.7. If the right opportunity arose, maybe a 7.5 or 7.6, but I want a 7.7. I think the 22.5 might be better. On my 20 Schwinn, after 10 - 12 miles my wrists and hands are kinda tired and tingly and the larger frame should help that, right? I think my main concern is that the standover height is just a bit snug. I can stand over it no prob, but if I want to pick up the bike and turn it, it'll be all up in my crotch. Maybe that's the way it should be? I'm going to go back to the bike shop Friday and ride a 20 and 22.5 again. They only have 7.2s and 7.3s, but that should suffice. Maybe after doing that again I can make up my mind. I've searched and read a lot of posts on various forums and most, but not all, are leaning to the larger frame for my measurements.

The most important thing is saddle height. I'm assuming you can adjust saddle height on either model to fit you properly. So the second consideration is handlebar position. From looking at pictures posted here, I think most hybrid riders prefer handlebars between an inch below saddle height and three inches above saddle height. Of course reach, the distance from saddle to bars affects rider position also.
A typical performance oriented riding position will put the rider's back at around 45º from vertical. More or less depending on the individuals strength and flexibility.

FXs are sweet bikes. I don't own one, but if I did it would be a 22.5. I'm a whisker under 6', but I ride large because of long arms and legs. The 20 is too small.

I put myself out of my misery today and ordered a Gary Fisher Mendota in 22.5". I hope I like it as I'm buying it sight unseen
Owner called somebody to get a frame size recommendation as the GF comes in 21" and 22.5". They recommended 22.5", too, so that's what I'll be getting. Now all I have to do is wait until next Friday. Ha!
