How do you determine the angle of the heel wing and bar end when setting these up on a Sirrus with flatbars? My OEM grips are giving me some heel numbness near the end of 20 mile rides. GP5s would allow more positions of my hands and use of the wrist's neutral vertical position on the bar ends. It is my understanding you want the wrist joint in a straight line with your forearm. Are padded gloves with a center unpadded channel a good thing to use to mitigate the numbness with these grips as well?

Those previously went under the name Ergon GC3 and are excellent grips.
Grips are only part of a comfortable riding interface and frame size, stem length and height and saddle position can all affect how much weight ends up on the rists. And some of it of course is personal preference. I've got those on three bikes and cut the bars down to get a reduced width.
The owners manual is always a good place to start. Installation instructions for these MUST be followed EXACTLY to avoid an incomplete installation and ineffective clamping. As well as installation instructions, the manual details the range of motion of both the barends and grips relative to each other.

Thanks for the link to the installation instructions. The picture of the hand on top of the grip with a checkmark next to it is their recommended position? However, the wrist should be straight with the forearm from what I've read. Other websites recommend the heel wing should be parallel to the ground to start with. So it looks like it will be a lot of trial and error to get them dialed in to avoid the numbness, if that is what is causing it.

I would recommend the bar ends to be perfectly flat with 0 angle. and adjust up to 30 degrees upwards if necessary (per the instructions). your seat height will effect the position of your arms on the grips so you want to take that into consideration. I started with 0 degree angle for the bar ends and that for me is the most comfortable position by far.
I have the heel wings at about 30 degree downward angle, which I think will be ideal for most people.

I have GP5s on my Sirrus and love them. Both the grips and bar ends are set nearly flat. I started with the bar ends up as much as possible and slowly lowered them after a few different tries. I also chopped my bars down 25mm on each side.

Thanks pierce. I was wondering what flat bar width people were using. My Sirrus is 620mm wide now with the OEM grips. How did you determine 25mm to cut off each end? Did you use shoulder width?

I took the grips off and moved the brake levers inboard, and road around my fairly large driveway with my hands at different positions trying to decide... then I wrapped some masking tape around the bar ends, and used that as a guide for my hacksaw.... hey, the tape was 1" wide, snicker. filed the cut ends smooth and rounded off the edges, installed the grips, and went, 'perfect!'.
actually, I sometimes think I could take another 15mm off each end, but I dunno, its OK where it is, and i couldn't put it back if I overcut it... FWIW, I wear a size 46 jacket (eg, 46" chest). 21" (550mm) is probably from about the middle of one shoulder to the next, a bit more than armpit to armpit...

Thanks Phoenix 6.0. How did you determine the amount to trim off the ends of your flat bar? Did you measure your shoulder width? Moving in the brakes and shifters was no problems?

Thanks Pierce. Yeah I'm a size 42 jacket and 5'9". I'm interested in using the bar ends for additional hand positions to prevent numbness. I don't want to have the bar ends too wide that it takes the wrist out of it's neutral vertical position and adds strain by slanting them inwards. This was mentioned in several threads on determining drop bar widths.

Thanks hwycruiser. I just moved my OEM's to that position and as soon as the heavy rain is over, I'm going to give them a test ride. Their heel wing isn't as supportive as Ergon's though.
