I initially found the seat on my FX hard and uncomfortable and had it swapped out for a puffy cushy gel deal. Hey, at least it got me out and riding longer. It wasn't long (couple weeks) before I felt I didn't need a big pillow under my butt and swapped back to the OE seat which I now really love.

And yes - bike shorts make a tremendous difference.

I initially just wanted a solid, decent quality bike to take short rides with my family on roads, gravel paths and woodland trails. My buddies who were into riding steered me away from the box store stuff and toward a couple first rate LBSs. The FX 7.2 disc was certainly more than the cheapo stuff I had previously been considering, but in line with similar bikes from other brands. I rode a bunch and just bought the one that I liked best in terms fo fit, feel and aesthetics.

Of course the damn thing got me hooked on cycling and now I'm eyeying up far more costly road bikes.

Still very happy with my choice - and choice is what you have in abundance with the FX range. My value picks from the lineup are the one I bought, or else the 7.4 - a solid return on the price premium for a 9 speed cassette and carbon forks - though I can't say I'm really missing either feature.

The range-topping 7.7FX is a very intriguing option - more a flat bar road bike than a hybrid - I'd love to try one out.

Me too but good luck on finding one in a shop! My local Trek shops only stock up to the 7.4FX - would have to special order anything higher.
