Newb looking for a bike
Hi all,
I've enjoyed biking most of my life, but mostly just casually, and my girlfriend and I were just starting to get more into it due to it being both an enjoyable hobby and for medical reasons--I sprained my ankle recently and she hurt her knee, so it's one of the few activities that we can do which is easy (well easier) on the joints, yet still challenging.
We've mostly been using the old mountain bikes I had as a teen and my parent's two road bikes--which while nice, aren't always available, and not really ideal for off-road paths. So I've been looking for two bikes just for us
We typically just do biking on bike paths, but we live in Pittsburgh PA, so some of the paths can get a little rough at times where they're not paved, and there are a lot of hills to go up and down. However, for the most part, the paths are not that bad. Certainly nowhere near what it'd be like going off and into the woods. Based on this and what I've read, a hybrid bike seems to make the most sense. However, I know next to nothing about what to look for in a hybrid bike and what I should be looking for when I buy.
I don't have a very large budget either, so I'm trying to get the most bang for my buck. Craigslist seems the most logical and it does have a lot of bikes available. I'd love to be able to pick something decent up for both of us for under $200 each (under $100 would be even better, but I'm not sure how much quality I'm sacrificing there). I saw a Trek SOHO S for $200, which looked like it was a pretty good deal, but it was only a single speed so I'm not sure that would meet our needs. I also found this bike https://pittsburgh.craigslist.org/bik/3839616710.html which looks nice, but again I know nothing of the quality.
Any advise on what to look for, or where I can learn more about what's good and in my price range would be really helpful. Also, it's not the biggest deal, but my gf would love a bike with a nice bright yellow/orange/blue color, something vibrant. Thanks!
