How much is to much ?
How much is to much to spend on a Hybrid ? Considering this bike will be used for charity, & group rides, fitness riding, commuting, and just quick trips to the store. There is always theft lurking on commuting, "depending on where you leave your bike" & shopping plus errand running.. I would think that 1500.00 to 2000.00 dollars max would be the very most spent on an all purpose bike. This is taken into consideration that the bike, plus all parts & upgrades are "NEW" not E-Bay or Craigslist finds.. Would this be an insane amount, reasonably, or room for more ? Thoughts ?

Whether something is too much or not depends on the person. There are a lot of people out there who think that I spend too much money on my bikes, and the amount I spend pales in comparison to what some people spend. At the end of the day, spend as much or as little as you want. Our opinion on how much is too much shouldn't matter to you.
But since you asked, here's my opinion: Why buy another hybrid? You already have one that works well. Your current bike could easily be set up to perform well in every type of riding that you mentioned above. Why spend more money (especially 4 figures) on a bike when you already have something that will do what you want it to do?

Depends on the person. Some people can do things with a $200.00 bike what others do on a $2000.00 bike. Just look at bike messengers for reference.

I'm not really in the market for another bike, sorry if my post came off that way.. But was debating this topic with another rider. He was saying 700.00 max on an all purpose bike, and I was trying to explain to him that you can easy exceed that amount with no problem.. I love my FX, seems like it was custom built for me..

It really depends on the person and their priorities. Most of the men on my dad's side of the family ride Harleys. Not just Harleys, but highly customized Harleys (I think this is nearly universal among Harley riders). My experience is that a person buys a Harley Davidson for around $15,000 and then spends several thousand dollars more customizing it. The customizing is as much of the hobby as actually riding the motorcycle.
My wife has a co-worker who started riding about a year ago. She keeps me updated on his progress and he routinely rides 20 miles and he's lost a ton of weight and is in the best shape of his life. He's riding a Wal-Mart bike.
$500 will get a person plenty of bike, even an all-rounder. A Trek 7.2 FX or something similar is sufficient for any riding 90% of the population will do.
On the other hand, custom framesets often run $1500 and up and boutique companies like Rivendell sell $2300 + framesets and their bikes are very much all-purpose, all-rounders.
Also, higher level road and mountain bikes quickly get into the several thousand dollar range and a LOT of people are buying these bikes.
I'm more like the Harley riders. I spent two years planning my build from the frameset up. I bought a beater bike and added new components to it as I bought them and then bought a new frameset, along with the last handful of components, and had it all built up into a brand new bicycle. I ended up with a unique bike. Custom wheelset, fat tires, Deore equipped and a real pleasure to ride and own. I've already got over $1500 invested and I'm already looking at more upgrades, like a different crankset and getting it powdercoated. Heck, I'm even considering buying a Surly Ogre frameset and moving everything over to that. The bike itself is as much a hobby as riding it. I could have bought a complete Surly Cross Check or Long Haul Trucker for less or the same money but that would have only satisfied half of my bicycling "itch".
My bike as it would look with a black frameset:

How much would depend on one's budget. When I was in the market for a new bike, my budget was only $500 so I just went from there. A friend of mine who I used to ride with ran out and bought a $1000 hybrid which I don't think he even test rode. He rode it a couple times and complained about it the entire time, I haven't seen him ride it since. Choose a bike you are the most comfortable on, most parts are interchangeable so a $500 bike can easily have the components found on a $1,000 bike installed if necessary.

I bought a $450 Sirrus, and have since added rack, bag, fenders, lights, clipless pedals and shoes to match. I'm planning to change the tires next. I'm happier this way rather than spending more money up front, since I only spend money on upgrades when I'm using the bike. It also gets the upgrades that I really think important. E.g., I'm satisfied with the Altus derailleur, and would rather get good tires first.

I got nothing, to dissuade you , I like Rohloff Hubs , they have sent all My Derailleur bikes,
to the back of the Queue.
a nice 700c 35 wide tire Hybrid would be a good build. even go Belt drive if you wish..

I wanted a starter bike to be used for fitness. I did not want to go beyond $500.00. Only because of the need for carbon fork did I go above that and got a bike at $650. I think my max for a hybrid bike was $700. I am not sure how much others would like to spend.
