2014 Bad Boy 9 slow?
Cycling newbie here. On flat ground I average between 12-15 mph depending on the obvious factors. I'm 50 years old, not looking to set land speed records. I seem to be pedaling at around the same pace as others but notice enough people flying past me. What makes a bike or cyclist fast? I see guys on road bikes using little effort and doing 20+mph. WTF? What am I doing wrong?

You're just starting cycling, that's what you're doing wrong! You should've started cycling many years ago!
No, seriously though...
Had you started a couple of years ago, by now you would have built up your leg and back muscles enough, so that other cyclists who've already built up their muscles groups, wouldn't be so much stronger than you. You're still in the primordial stage of cycling muscle development. Just like the fastest car is the one with the strongest and most efficient engine, the fastest cyclist, is the one with the most developed leg and back muscles. Therefore, continue to workout, continue to cycle, and make your engine stronger!

If people are pedaling at the same cadence as you and are passing you, then I surmise they are using a more difficult gear than you. Try shifting down a bit if this bothers you. But the more you ride, the stronger you will become and this will be easier on you. But the main thing to understand is you are riding for the enjoyment of riding. So I wouldn't worry about what anyone else is doing.
You aren't doing anything wrong. Have fun!
