Substitute for Bar Ends on Hybrid
Recently, I took a trip over the handlebars on my MTB (tried to jump a log, but didn't). I came through fine except for two large bruises where my left hand and right forearm hit the bar ends on the way over. I immediately took the bar ends off that bike and off of my hybrid thinking under the right, i.e. very wrong, circumstances I might break one or both wrists on them. I miss having the alternate hand position on my hybrid, however. What's a good option? I was thinking of trekking bars.
My bike is a Jamis Coda.

If one falls, one could break something. Not sure if the bar-ends increase that chance, but you were there....
There are shorty bar-ends (some integrated with grips) that offer at least one additional position.
You could look at H bars too I suppose.

Trekking bars. Short, stubby bar ends (like the Ergon GP2). Adjusting the bar ends to point more downwards, or actually getting "drop bar ends".

Trekking bars are your best bet... it seems rather silly though to just dump the bar ends after an accident though.. the bar ends didn't cause your injuries, you did. Under the "right" circumstances, every single part of the bike can hurt you.

Trekking bars or those short type bar ends seem like my best bet. They're so radically different from each other though. Hmm....
It's true I caused the crash but the bar ends caused the injuries. That part is clear.

Those are good points, Norman. I have Wald style handlebars on my Raleigh Twenty but I don't think they'd do well on the Jamis cause I sometimes take it on dirt roads, not MTB trails but unpaved streets and the like.

I tried drop bar ends on my hybrid but didn't like them because they could only be positioned narrow, also due to the angle of the bars adding the drop bar ends resulted in a grip poorly aligned. eventually I swapped the stock bars for drop bars.

Very interesting! I might have to get those for my Specialized Crossroads.

Actually, now I'm not sure if they would work.
"...it appears they are designed to go best with single speed and/or coaster brake bikes. The grip section is too short to fit a hand grip plus brake lever plus bar-mounted shifters (grip shift or thumb shift)."

Obviously the skill the OP had in log jumping was lacking , it really had little to do with the parts on the bike .
Next time you Know, stop, dismount, lift the bike up with you hands and step over the log,
then remount, and continue.
For day to day street/touring riding I like Trekking Bars they are on 2 bikes, here .
