Specialized Globe Centrum-Rebuild/Modify
 

So here is my latest build. It started out life innocently enough as a 2008 Specialized Globe Centrum single speed. These are cool bikes as they came from the factory but with entry level components like cable actuated disc brakes, square taper bottom bracket/heavy crank, heavy wheels, heavy handlebar, and heavy stem they are just begging to be upgraded. Lol.

When I purchased the bike it had seen some use. There were lots of areas with cable rub (through the paint) and the components had seen better days. Fortunately, I purchased the bike specifically for the purpose of upgrading/rebuilding it. :thumb:

Here is the (almost) end result. All I have left to do is purchase/install a matching FSA carbon seatpost and shorten the brake lines. It's running a 1x9 drivetrain.

I'm actually considering removing the decals on the wheels and replacing the stem and bar to something that better matches the blacked out look of the bike.

This is really impressive thanks for posting. I'm sure I'm asking something I shouldn't, but would it be possible to fit 2 chain rings on the crank? I've got a long comute and there is a Globe going for $250....

This is the Centrum model and it came as a single speed. I added the dropouts to convert it to multi in the rear and I'm sure if you added a cable guide on the bottom of the BB housing you could install a front derailleur and a double crank.

You did a very nice job; but, it's a little swoopy for me.......

Which model Globe do you have? This one is a 2008 Globe Centrum and started off as a single speed.

A few things to also consider....

Are you planning on running a double in the front? If so, you'll also need a cable guide on the bottom of the bottom bracket housing. You'll need one with a built in cable stop because there are no cable stops on that frame. So you'll need to run a shifter cable all the way from the rear shifter to the rear derailleur. You can either just wire tie the cable to the frame (which looks like crap) or you can order some cable clamps like these:

I have one myself and would like to upgrade to a single speed 29" or 700c disc brake wheel set. Right now it is 26" 3-speed.


The bike is originally designed for 26" but has a lot of tire clearance.


How is the clearance holding up?
Did you had to make any adjustments?
How is the geometry/handling of the bike with the 700c wheels?

I've build a few of these over the past few years and I haven't had any issues with tire clearance. Obviously there is a limit to what size tires you can mount because it was designed as a 26" wheeled bike but I've experienced no issues and it actually handles better than with the 26" wheels.

The 38t is perfect. I have an 11-34 on the rear now so it gives me plenty of range. :thumb:

Although it really doesn't much matter because I haven't rode it much (at all) since building my Carbon Sirrus. :p

Here is the bike in it's current state. I removed a few of the components to use on another bike and used some of the components from my new Sirrus Expert disc carbon to put it back together. I'm not sure if this is allowed here or not but I wanted to mention that is is now for sale. Everything is brand new on the bike save for the frame, fork, and seatpost. I'm selling it because now that I have my Sirrus I really don't need two hybrids. This is an awesome bike and has some very nice components on it. Let me know if you are interested.

Please note that the shifter cable for the rear derailleur isn't installed in these photos but the bike does come complete.

Wow, nice build. I've also modified mine quite a bit. I had it as a 700c/29er, but the bike was too tall to put my foot down at stoplights, so I added a Specialized CommandPost dropper seatpost. After riding it that way for a while, I swapped the wheels out for a 650b set with 35c Michelin tires which ride great and feel much more stable than the 23c ones I had on the 700c wheelset.

But what I am most interested in is where you ordered your dropouts from. I suspected this was a possible mod, but could never find the correct dropouts for this frame. Thank you for the part numbers!

Is there a dealer stateside that has them? TIA.

Edit: BTW, since the Centrum already has the non-driveside dropout, I only need to order the right side dropout, correct? TIA

Update: I managed to find the part on eBay through a seller in Australia. The seller agreed to ship it by postal service which reduced the total part cost to about $20 USD. My local Specialized dealer couldn't find the part number at all in their database, and told me the dropout typically costs about $35(!). Anyway, I got the part in a few weeks and it's a perfect fit.

I agree, they do share similar designs. Now I'm intrigued to see what the Centrum would be like with drops. I'll compare the geometry with the Anyroad and if I do a conversion I'll pop back on this thread...

ive just found this thread while searching for the Globe recall... I rode mine for a few years and then its just sat in a 1/2 deconstructed state for a while.

seeing this build has given me some ideas to get it to where I originally thought it would be when I rode it home. immediately I wanted to add a shorter stem and some mountain downhill styler riser bars to it, and now seeing the 29er bits I'd love to add that and some more gears to my rear wheel. I bought the San Francisco model initially, so it has the internal geared hub, which I meant to regar but never got around to.

wondering if I could pick your bran about what direction to take this.
