My new 2014 Sirrus Expert Carbon Disc... with a few mods! V2.0

Here is the follow up thread to the original I started right after I brought the bike home. From the factory the bike weighed 21 lbs 6 oz. which I thought was a lot considering it sells for $2K+. After the first round of mods it weighed in at a more respectable 18 lbs 10 oz. Here is a link to the original thread...

https://www.bikeforums.net/hybrid-bic...-few-mods.html

Now, with the new XTR brakes and Mavic Crossmax SL wheels it's down to a feathery 17 lbs 5 oz. I'm thinking this has to be one of the lightest hydraulic disc brake hybrids around. I'm installing a Specialized CG-R carbon seatpost this weekend to smooth out the ride and I'm still toying with the idea of upgrading the drivetrain to the new XTR 11 speed but I'm having trouble justifying the cost. But knowing how OCD I am I will probably just do it so the drivetrain will match the brakes.

Anyway, here is a list of the upgraded components and a few photos. Let me know what you think.

Upgrades:

Mavic Crossmax SL wheelset W/Avid HSX heat shedding rotors
Schwalbe Ultremo ZX 28mm tires
XTR Race hydraulic disc brakes
XT shifter
XT rear derailleur
XT 11-34t cassette
XT chain
XT pedals
Specialized Romin Evo Expert saddle
Specialized Contour XC grips
FSA K-Force carbon 100mm stem
FSA K-Force carbon flatbar
FSA Team Issue carbon crank
Rotor Q-Rings 38t chainring
Rotor chain keeper
Jagwire shifter cable

Beautiful looking bike, but the scuffed up handlebar & crank stand out for the wrong reasons.

Sure looks scuffed up in the pics.

Nice bike, but I would also like to see at least a 50-34 on the front, (and heresy - a triple wouldn't bother me either).

The logo on the drive side crank arm has a little scratch on it but other than that the crank and bars are perfect. They are UD carbon so maybe it just looks like it is scuffed.

Now maybe it is funny lighting, the stickers or angle of the photo, or that is how it is actually supposed to look, but the handlebars look like they have taken a beating.

Nope, the bars are brand new with no scuffing. It's the lighting and/or the look of the UD carbon.

The 34-11t cassette with a 38t up front doesn't really float my boat, any decent pace on the flat would need a cadence of about 500rpm. Do you live somewhere hilly?

I wondered if the bars and cranks had snail trails on them before realising it was the carbon pattern, nice . Good choice to go for the CG-R seatpost, they work well and will really enhance the comfort

I live in a city dubbed "the city of seven hills" so I wouldn't exactly call that flat. The gearing on the bike has worked for me in the past without any issues climbing. It's essentially like just using the small chainring on a double setup.

If you're thinking a cadence 500 rpm is normal, you should be a professional racer and win every event you ever enter. The average rpm is somewhere near 60 rpm. Make sure you don't wear your Superhero outfit when you show up to race though. I think you may scare everyone else off.

My Crosstrail has a 48-36-26, with an 11-32 9 spd, and there a couple hills on my regular route, that require the 26-32 to get up while still seated. So, while not turning 500RPM, I still might be coming up them at 60RPM. One of them, the hill up to the A&W, is ungodly!

And, my normal cadence is usually 70-85, because I'm old.

p.s. I don't know anyone who rides in the 26-32 at 500RPM, while out on the flats....................or even in the 34-30 while on my compact.

And I don't like to go up that A&W hill on my Sirrus, with a 34-30 without standing........LOL the 26-32 on the Crosstrail does it better.

70-85 is good going. That 26 - 32 is also good and gets used on my crosstrail, it's there, so it needs using. Even the Sirrus gets shod in 11-32 for serious days out, with big hills. 11 - 28 for commuting and 12 - 30 for just in case rides.

Nowt wrong with gears and they work great standing

Here are a few better photos of the bars with a close up. With this lighting you can see it's the weave of the carbon that makes it appear as if it's scuffed up.

Okay. I've never owned any carbon components, so I didn't realise that the weave could show like that.

I know. I have some S Works one's on order. They are black and grey and should match the bike very well.

In other news, I just went and picked up my S Works CG-R seatpost.

It's a few grams heavier than the stock one but I think the trade off is worth it for the added comfort.

This thing is light, fast, and handles amazing. I'm super pumped for this years riding season!

That's really light and it's awesome that you got it that light. My new build comes in at 20.6 lbs. But, my wheels are heavier than yours. My wheelset is 2100g. My saddle is a Brooks, so it's heavy. The only carbon I'm running is my fork. I think I could get below 20lbs with changes to the wheels, saddle, and grips. Not sure where else I could shed weight. I'm already riding DA and XTR. Your frame is probably lighter and perhaps your fork. My frame is 2.2 lbs. My fork is 2.1 lbs.

My bike rides awesome and feels like, I can only imagine how lively yours feels. Oh, and awesome pics of the carbon parts you are running. Yeah, the carbon weave really shows up crazy in pics.

The reason why I ask is that it lists the weight of the fork as being 694 grams or 1.53 pounds

yep, that's my fork. I thought I saw that it was 2.1. For some reason that was the number that was in my head.

man I just stumbled apon this bike. I love what you have done with this bike. I'm thinking about selling my supersix Evo and building up one of these. I want something more versital. And I just don't need to be crazy fast trying to drag knee down hill. This bike looks like something you can have a ton of fun on without gettin to crazy. I don't need to brake any more bones. How are you liking the bike?

I actually sold it. It was a great bike but I wanted something with a little more versatility. I ended up picking up a Salsa Vaya frameset and building it up from scratch. HEre is a link to that thread in case you missed it.
