Bikes: 77 Le Tour 2, 75 Travler 12 speed, 80 collegant,79 FF Suburban 5 speed positron and 2 95 autobikes 73 Schwinn Twinn De Lux with Atom brake on the rear ,Freesprit (england ) 10 speed yea 73 Schwinn Super Sport, 73 Schwinn Breeze, 69 Collegiate

my preferance for older Schwinns

i prefer the older schwinns to rides as they are duriable and classic alwalys works. I own 5 classic schwinns, a 75 travler 12 speed with the Aryra duraplate 27 inch wheels still on it. My best ryder is a 77 LeTour II all orignal except the seat which i shall get a replace ment as soon as I find a like new orignal to put on it. Next is a 77 Suburban that needs the Positron cable to make it fully function. Next a commmon Next 21 speed for just fun riding. then a 55 Murry masqurading as a sears 3 speed among the 22 bike that I own but preffer the older bikes as they were built with quality. I ride as often as i can weather permiting. I have supplied my grandchildren with bicycles as they grow up with the type and color of their chosing and love to ride with them along the bike paths here in town.

I was always under the impression that Schwinn is Canadian Tire-quality, in other words sub-par.

For the Americans on the forum, Canadian Tire is a mainstay hardware and automotive store which also sells bikes.

My view on this has somewhat changed, since I began riding an old Triumph (used to be sold at Zellers). It's one solid bicycle made of steel, and I've already put over 2000km on it.

So I guess Schwinns could be enjoyable bikes.

I enjoy mine but cant stand any new bike ,If you want to get exercise why do it on a super light weight bike and just have to go futher to get the same results ...So I ride my older bikes depending on my mood. I might grab 1 of my Ross bikes or even a single speed beach cruiser just depends on my mood but my keeper bike are all my 70s Schwinns

You could not be more wrong.
From 1895 through the "bike boom" of the '70's years the Arnold, Schwinn & Company in Chicago produced the highest quality machines in North America.

Examples: The Paramount and the Pixie.

As well as tons and tons of low-end bikes, which were heavy but still pretty durable.

It's important to learn the schwinn model heirarchies, so you can tell the good stuff from the lousy stuff.

There never was any "lousy stuff" made in the Chicago factory, if "lousy" means Low Quality.
The construction of attractive durable practical machines that were straight, well finished and fitted with good quality long lasting components was the hallmark of Schwinn from the 19th century through the boom years. A Chicago Schwinn was Cadillac quality and priced accordingly, they were not "low end". A Schwinn was an investment in an era when a kid's bike could be passed down in perfectly serviceable condition for an entire generation of use. It was the great durability, reliability and dealer service that the marque was famous for in a time when those were the most important qualities for bicycle buyers.

For racers and serious club cyclists Paramount models were World class, and highly sought after today.

Revisionist/Elitist history is not really History.
