Greetings from a life-long cyclist (with broken time)

Hello everyone. I sort of posted what could be classified as in introduction in another post, so I'll replicate it here.

I remember my first bike. It was one of those radio-flyer tricycles. Ok, technically that's a trike.

My first bike was a little red Roadmaster with training wheels. We lived in the woods, on a lot of dirt roads, and didn't have many convenient places to ride that kind of bike, but that was the bike I learned to ride.

In the later '80s, I started riding a BMX type bike that marketers seem to push at kids. The seat was uncomfortable, as were the metal pedals (I liked to ride bare footed). I rode it a lot anyway because I liked riding bicycles (and we didn't have video game systems in the '80s if you were poor).

My first bike that I really liked was a Huffy cruiser. I rode that thing miles and miles each day. I think I got that thing in 1989. I'm not positive though.

I rode that bike until the wheels fell off and it was glorious.

In 1997, I replaced my cruiser with a Huffy mountain bike from Walmart because, while I liked my cruiser, there are some really steep hills around where I live and I thought gears would come in handy.

I hated riding that bike. Sport bikes have straight handlebars that cause you to hunch over, and it really hurts my lower back. Riding was no longer fun, and I largely quit by 2001 or so.

In 2005 or 2006, I made a major modification to my mountain bike. Being the same brand as my cruiser, I figured some of the parts might be compatible, and I took the stem and handlebars off of my cruiser and installed them on my mountain bike.

The result was a bike I really liked to ride. I started riding again.

Around 2009 my riding took another hiatus due to marriage stuff.

This year, I replaced bald tires and one of the shifter cables which keeps rusting and breaking and started riding every day again. So, yes, I'm still riding a 19 year old Huffy mountain bike modified with parts from a 1989 Huffy cruiser, and an after-market seat.

I'm looking forward to something new that I will like even more. My main purpose in joining this forum is to have a community I can canvas in my search for a new bicycle.

But since I've started riding every day, I find that I like it just as much as I did as a kid. I've even started commuting and running errands on my bike when I can get away with it.

I suppose I should also mention that I'm a self-employed professional living in North Central Florida. I'm married with a several kids. The wife doesn't ride. All the kids do. I'm also creeping up on 40, so it's a good time to make sure I stay in good shape.

Wow. Is that one of those radio Huffys? Or is that just some fancy ornamentation?

Thanks. :-) I'm already having a lot of fun figuring out where I can get on my bike. My new house is in a more central location, so lots of places are convenient by bicycle for the first time in my life.

Before, it was purely recreational, but now I can also do actual tasks.
