NOOB alert

Hey everyone, Im from the Bay Area Ca. but spend most of my free time away from the city (ironic, since I'm a civil engineer student) I am really interested in getting into "downhill riding/dirt jumping" not sure if they are the same thing. Is it just me or are the bikes expensive as hell? anyways would really appreciate all of your guy's suggestions and opinions.

Welcome to Bikeforums. Before you start burning through money, as many posters here encourage, have you checked into the history of downhill and mountain biking in general? Klunkers in particular? Started out with old coaster brake beaters. Many of the founding fathers are still active in the industry and even on this forum.

From: Around here somewhere

Bikes: 3 Rollfasts, 3 Schwinns, a Shelby and a Higgins Flightliner in a pear tree!

My bikes are expensive as hell too but all of them are antique and under $800 finished.

Until I get the itch to own a Colson or something waaaay out there.

MTB is actually a cheap hobby IMO.
