Hello from Southern Maine

I had two days of leadership training ("Engineer as Coach") a couple weeks ago. What does this have to do with biking you ask? One of the things that the instructor said was that frequently a breakdown (i.e. set back, etc.) often leads to a break through. That happened to me this year, which is why I'm posting this message.

In late February I awoke at 4am in excruciating flank pain (I was guessing kindney stone - I was right). Ended up in the ER. While I was there I was diagnosed with diabetes. This was the day of my "breakdown". Saw the doctor the next day; she wanted to try to control it with diet and exercise. OK, works for me. Saw the Diabetic Educator the next week with my son. She explained just how important exercise is with diabetes. My son said, "I'm going to get him back on the bike this summer." I'm thinking of a stationary bike. Thanks to him, I got a new bike the end of March (Fuji Nevada MTB).

That first ride (~ 1 mile) was brutal. Since then I've logged almost 1300 miles, over 700 of which are commuting to work (16 miles round trip); I've lost 50 pounds and my diabetes is well under control (blood sugar in the normal to pre-diabetes range). Thus the break through. Yeah, I'm proud of myself.

OK, enough of that crap.

Not really looking forward to winter, but I guess I'll ride as long as I can. Gotta get a front fender (rack works well enough in the back), also gonna get some slicks for next year (thinking of Contental Town & Country).

I saw a bumper sticker on the Casco Bay Bridge a few weeks ago that said something like, "Biking is fun, Burn Fat, Not Oil". I like that!

I've really enjoyed riding with my son this summer, especially the ride where we went from Maine through New Hampshire, & into Mass.

I'm looking forward to participating the Eastern Trail Alliance's 8 Lighthouse Ride later this month and plan on riding the Eastern Trail from Portsmouth NH to Portland ME next year.

I expect I'll get a lot out of these boards and hope to be able to contribute a little.

Hi,
yeah, I had a couple doctors yelling at me a few years ago.
I could take the yelling, it was the stuff they were going to do that get me off my fat ass. So I have pretty much the same story.

Welcome aboard. Couple weeks ago, we went from Falmouth to Cornish on Mon, to Moutlonboro to Tue, North Conway on Wed, and then back home from North Conway on fri. Was a nice ride, if a bit hilly in places.
