Hi from HI

Aloha from Hawaii. I been reading threads here for a while, and i finally decided to register. I used to ride a mongoose zero g, i still sometimes ride it. But i'm looking to get something i can use for a better commute/exercise/fun bike.

Aloha! Would you be looking at a road bike, or something more like cyclocross/hybrid? Mountain?

If you've been lurking, you probably know all about the regional forums and all that, so I'll leave it

Welcome to BF!

Im looking for a singlespeed or fixed gear bike, since i only keep it at one gear setting on my mongoose anyway. I've been searching for a decent used bike i can convert, still no luck. I might just buy a complete one online, but shipping to hawaii is expensive.

edit: Yeah i saw the regional forums, but not much going on for hawaii. :[

Out fishing with Annie on his lap, a cigar in one hand and a ginger ale in the other, watching the sunset.

You could also confert the Mongoose, or look around for an older mid 80's road frame and strip the derraileurs and switch out the back wheel!

Don't know your size needed, but here's a good candidate in Waipio

Hey geekaleek. I picked up an old Miyata frame at Eki Cyclery in Kalihi and built it into a singlespeed. They usually get older used frames. Try to call them and ask. You may be able to find something at one of the Salvation Army's or something. But, most bike shops I go to around here only have new or expensive used frames. What Island are you on? I'm on Oahu.

Thanks everyone. Yeah i dropped by Eki cyclery couple days ago, and the guy that works there seems nice. I'll probably go there again. I'm leaning towards buying a complete bike and upgrade over time, being that i have no experience with builing a bike from scratch. Any shops on oahu that have decent complete fixed gear bikes, or do i have to order? I only saw one at Eki.

Yeah, the folks at Eki are pretty friendly. The Bike Shop in Aiea/Pearl City had a Kona Paddy Wagon a few months ago. They are also Specialized dealers so they can get Langter's. IT&B on Kapahulu has Bianchi's, if you want a Pista. I'm not sure if McCully has any fixed gear bikes. Then there is Bikewerx in Mililani, they have KHS and Felt. If you order from online you really have to look for deals. Shipping will eat up some loot. Happy hunting.

I've narrowed my choices to buying a pista from ITB or a rush hour from Eki. I'll probably buy the rush hour from Eki after looking at them again when i have time.
