New Member from DC/MD area.

Hello everyone,

Just wanted to formally introduce myself to everyone on this board. I reside in Silver Spring, MD...not too far from DC and Im actually a newb when it comes to biking. I'm currently a junior at the University of MD and plan on commuting there so i'm basically looking for any type of advice when it comes to riding. Most likely I'm gonna wanna commute to DC also.
Right now I'm not riding anything...just trying to research and get a good idea of what will suit me best for riding. Ultimately i want to end up with a fixie.

Currently i've been advised to check out a Giant OCR3, Trek 7.5 or 7.6, Gary Fischer Mendota, Jamis Coda Sport or a Kona Jake the Snake as far as commuting.
As for a fixed-gear I was planning on getting a basic Bianchi Pista, get accustomed to riding it and then customizing the components to my individual needs as time progresses. Probably gonna upgrade my frame and throw my components that i use on my pista down the line.

Any advice i'd really appreciate.

THANX!

Hello Mangor$m, I've heard a lot of good things about the Jamis Coda Sport, so I think if I were in the same market as you, that's probably what I would buy.

Why a Bianchi Pista?

Welcome to BF!

Thanks EH!
Umm...just basically because of the affordability of the pista, some of the various advice that was given to me and just basically being a newb, i feel like i should start from somewhere.

Any other options you'd recommend in the same price range with hopefully better quality?

There's nothing basically wrong with the Bianchi, but a cheaper option is the vintage steel bike (mind you, don't remove any braze-ons or do anything that can't be reversed!). That's something that could be brought back to original glory if and when you tire of SS/FG. Unless you plan on racing at a velodrome? The Bianchi is a track bike, after all.
