Surviving
Hello Everyone
I started biking in June after a long period of fear. I am riding my bike to work about twice a week (10 miles) and getting a ride home with my husband (we work together). I am wondering, how many people here have been hit by a car, or hit a dog ( both for me), and what are your philosophies for staying safe on the road? I always wear a helmet and now I am riding defensively. Do you use a mirror? What kind of legislation is out there for bikers? Are there bumper stickers I can get for my four wheeled vehicle? Strobe lights for my bike? Thanks to all for responses..............Leigh

Hello Leigh, I've never been hit by a car, nor hit a dog. Staying safe on the road involves many things--personal protection, such as wearing a helmet and gloves; defensive riding, such as taking the lane as necessary, riding with the flow of traffic; staying alert, by using not only a mirror, but learning to look over one's shoulder without swerving.
Legislative action-check in the Advocacy and Safety forum
Bumper stickers--check the Market Place (I think I've seen some members advertising them for sale)
Strobe lights--lighting for your bicycle can be found in the Electronics & Gadgets forum.
As for me, I keep my eyes open and look ahead down the road. I don't run red lights or stopsigns. I have lights on a couple of my bikes. I wear a high vis vest.
It's good to hear that you are working on overcoming your fear. Don't let it keep you from enjoying your life.
Welcome to BF!

Hey Leigh, its good to see you are back in the saddle. As East Hill said, there are plenty of places on here to see what people are doing for safety, one of my personal favorites is the Commuting board. You will find alot of people who ride in traffic everyday, and talk about their incidents and what they have done to over come them. I know somewhat how you feel, i have never been fully hit, but i guy clipped me with the mirror of his truck some time ago, it hurts pretty bad. On top of that, it took me some time to get serious about biking after many injuries from racing and jumping, i learned to stay on the ground for the most part now.
Just stick with it, and remember to have fun.
