New Commuter in SoCal

Hello. I started commuting two weeks ago and I've really enjoyed it. It's only 2 miles one way. Somedays I even ride home and back during my one hour lunch. I almost wish it was farther.

I'm riding a hardtail MTB. I'm glad to have some suspension since about a third of the streets I ride are being repaved and are all torn up right now. I've equipped it with lights from and rear since it gets dark on the way home.

I live in the San Fernando Valley, outside L.A. It was pretty scary to start riding in the streets. I have to take busy streets because that's the only way to get o my work, but I'm getting used to it.

Just wanted to say hello!

Hey...

Glad to see another new commuter. It's extremely addictive, and you are right: soon you'll really wish your commute was further. Mine's 8 miles each way, and I'm starting to leave early to take the long way to work. How's it in Woodland Hills cycling-wise? Do you get rude people trying to run you off the road or telling you to ride on the sidewalk or anything?

Hey SD, where do you have to ride to? There a lot of streets that you could take to stay away from the traffic.

oh yeah, welcome to the forums.

I haven't had anybody yell at me... yet. I work right on Ventura Blvd. which has the freeway parallel to it blocking any cross streets, so I kinda have to ride on Ventura at some point. I'm sure I can find other routes, but I think they'll be significantly longer and more hilly. I'm not saying that's bad though! Maybe I'll go out and find some today since it's the weekend! It's really nice to hear from other riders. Thanks guys.

Yay, another commuter, welcome to the fold!

Meet your fellow insane commuters in the Commuter forums. We're a friendly bunch, just don't ride on the wrong side of the road and wave to other fellow commuters..

Today, I was being paced by a helicopter who was flying overhead for some reason... I figured I'd try to keep up on my MTB commuter too but then he turned off the road..
