Please allow me to introduce myself...
Hello everyone here at Bike Forums. How is everyone?
Anyway I'm rzm61. I come here bearing a few questions. I checked out the FAQ and I thought it might be best to ask the cats here who would know a lot more about this then I would.
Anyway, I'm a skateboarder however it might shock some of you that I have a fond respect for BMXers, along with "fruit-booters"
I call them that cause in-liners and rollerbladers doesn't sound right to me. Anyway, I've been interested in getting a BMX bike for myself to play around on every once in awhile, also I am hitting a delema that won't allow me to drive my car. So I wanna invest in a bike so I can get around town and to and from work.
A friend of mine who is a biker told me that I shouldn't get a BMX bike to come to work, I would wanna shoot myself by the time I got to the town thats right outside of my job. So anyway, I was wondering if anyone could give me some pointers as to what I should look into.
My journey to my job is about 30 minutes tops. I would say, maybe 10-15 miles from my house? That might even be a higher number then what it really is. I'm just taking a stab here at the distance. So any help would be appriciated, I plan on getting to a bike shop hopefully tomorrow to check out some bikes, talk to the guys and possibly make a purchase.
Well thanks for your time, and see you around the forum.

Hi rzm61, it's not that you can't use a BMX bike to get around, but it's really not meant to be a commuting bike. Better to get something like a MTB for a commuter, and put slicks on it so you can go faster. You don't need a full suspension MTB either, a hardtail would work just fine.
How hilly is the commute? How are you planning to carry everything you need with you?
Welcome to BF!

Hey East Hill, thanks for the welcome.
I never said that a BMX bike can't be used to get around, I was just mentioning that my friend said it wouldn't be wise to use a BMX bike to commute to work an all. I'm looking at it as I would get good exercise either way. Plus I would want to use this bike for recreation. About the hills.....I would say there is about one real good hill on my way to work. About carrying everything, I don't need anything for work besides myself and my ID badge, so that's nothing to worry about, however I would use a backpack if I needed to bring more things with me to where I was going.
Also when you say MTB, do you mean Mountain Bike?

I think you definitely get some good exercise using a BMX bike, but remember that they only come with one gear, so you would in effect be riding a fixed gear up that hill. If you can't go for two bikes, I would say that you could use a BMX bike, but it's definitely going to be lacking in comfort. Perhaps you could look for a cheap MTB as well, and use that as a commuter?
Yes, MTB stands for mountain bike.

Yeah, I'm undecided as to what I should do.
If I go with the MTB, I can just fix up my old one. It's got a flat, but it seems like every time you get on the ***** it gets a flat.
Quite a nusance.
Speaking of which, anyone getting database errors?
I keep experiencing lag from this place and nothing but database errors. It's starting to piss me off, I'm trying to lurk around a bit and I keep running into issues.
