New Guy From New Jersey

Hey all,

I just joined because I'm looking to get a road bike and do a lot more riding then I've done in the past. I have a 20some year old mountain bike that I've been trying to manage with but as I'm beginning to ride more on the road it's obvious I need new wheels. I know next to nothing about cycling and a brief browse of this forum really shows me I have a lot to learn.

Bikes: Nishiki Nut! International, Pro, Olympic 12, Sport mixte, and others too numerous to mention.

Hi Michael, what's your mountain bike? You don't necessarily need new wheels, but some slicks for your bike would probably help considerably!

Welcome to BF, and feel free to PM me with any questions !

welcome!
NSEW nj?
check out eBay or craigslist for a used, in good shape, starter road bike, ride it, and then decide if upgrade is what you're looking for. easthill has a good suggestion of wheel upgrade as well, unless you are working with a sears, wally-world, or huffy.
welcome x2 and where abouts in nj area are you from?!!

I'm in Edison. I have a Nishiki bike now. It was pretty much the cheapest bike the shop had when I bought it. It has served me well when I would ride it, but has sat dormant for many years and got pretty rusty. I resurrected a few years ago and put tires more suitable for road riding. I'm at a point in my riding where I'm going for longer rides and this bike just isn't hacking it. Around town or 10 miles on the canal is fine but trying to push 20 plus on the road is tough. I tried some road bikes at the local shop and was quite impressed with the way they feel. Now I just need to wade though all the info and make an informed decision.

I used to live down in Highland Park, and there was a decent bike shop there.

Check out the Trek 1200 or the Trek 1500, or their component equals from Giant, Specialized, and Fuji.

Most bikes come with Shimano components, and the model line up from worst to best goes Sora, Tiagra, 105, Ultegra, and Dura Ace. I never liked the Sora stuff, especially the shifters, so find a bike either new or used, with Tiagra or 105 components.

Highland Park Cyclery is where I've been looking. They've been very helpful and patient.
