Newb Checking in From Fargo, ND
Hi Everyone!!!
I am currently living in Fargo, ND. I have been parusing the forums for awhile and have started shopping around for a bikes finally!!! I have quickly found out that this is much like shopping for a car! But it is exciting!
I am looking for a bike that will be a good strong sturdy commuter, as I am looking to ease the fuel bills a little bit, and seeing that my commute is only 2.5 miles to work I figured I might as well bike it!
I am looking forward to everyones advice.

Hello IC, have you found yourself a bike yet? What did you get? Are you planning on riding the bike through the snow and ice?

I see a fair number of bike shops in Fargo. Several clustered around Morehead on the east side of town. Maybe a college near there? Just visit several shops and ask about commuter bikes. Have your antenna out and feel for the impressions you get about the shops and the staff in them. Find a shop you are comfortable dealing with. Lot of reasonably priced bikes can be turned into a commuter. If you get steered to a racing bike or a full-on mountain bike be leery of that shop. Look for a bike that has the holes or attachments or braze-ons for fenders and racks. If a bike can not handle wider tires like 700x32 or 35 and up you may have trouble fitting fenders and the metal studded tires you will want during the winter months. You may want to reduce the price you are willing to pay for the bike from $800 to $500 or even less in order to afford the extra stuff you will need for four-season commuting. Cloths are a whole 'nother world. Have a look through www.sheldonbrown.com for more info .
