Wheel Intregity vs. Spoke Count
I am considering getting a set of wheels custom built and am looking for some input. I'm thinking Velocity Deep V rims with machined surfaces. For the hubs I have been pointed towards Formulas but have read some so-so reviews on them. Also, I am concerned about rim/wheel intregity vs. spoke count. Deep V's can be holed at 16,18,24,28,32,36 and 40. The mainstay is 32 and 36. I am 170 lbs, riding solely on roads. I'm gonna make the assumption that the rear wheel needs to be stronger than the front due to driving force through the chain and weight focus towards the rear of the bike. 16-18 spokes in the front and 18-24 in the rear would be ideal in my head for looks but durability is more important than that. I am curious to the lowest spoke count i go for in front and back, as well as hub information. I'd like a flipflop hub, which is what i am currently running now and like the option of a fix or single. Thanks guys!

If you dont want to walk home when you get a broken spoke, get 28 at the back. 16 or 18 should be fine for the front. However why buy deep Vs if you are concerned with weight

i guess i'm not too concerned about weight. probably just threw that out there while writing the post. more concerned about durablity and i've read that deep v's are highly durable in all conditions. thanks for the input though! appreciate it. any thoughts on hubs?

Deep V's are the wheel of choice for a road bike in the Clydesdale Subforum for sheer strength and durability. We've had great results. This is for riders in the 200+ category and some in the 300+ lb category. We do run higher spoke counts, 32-36, but that's only a few grams.

Hello Kyle, I can't help you with the merits of spoke counts, but as alway, I can say hello!
