Yo, from the Bronx
I've lived in various place in NYC for about 10 years, settling in the Riverdale/Kingsbridge area about 7 years ago. I've been biking to mid town to work since about April, since I can't run anymore due to some joint issues. Here is a pic of my bike, which I got at Continuum Cycles. 
If you life in NYC and have contemplated biking it, I totally recommend it. There is no better way to really get to know the city.
Today I'm going to go down Manhattan and take the Ferry to Staten Island, go down and back, and then take the Eastside Greenway back up (I've never ridden on the east side). If you see me, wave.
