Crack in paint of headtube
A few weeks ago while cleaning my new Trek 5.5 I noticed a small vertical crack in the paint starting at the bottom of the headtube, about 2cm tall, recently it's increased marginally. My LBS took the forks off and had a look around inside and reckon it's in the paint work. What do you think? Are such paint cracks common, it's not at any joining point that I know of, but I'm a bit worried. Apologies for poor res pic

Welcome.
Ask the folks in the Bicycle Mechanics forum or the Road Cycling forum. Maybe they've heard of this problem on other bikes.

Send Email to Trek and the shop so you have a dated record, which might be useful to you if things get worse later. A quality inspection outfit that has ultrasonic crack detection equipment could give you a quantitative answer.

You have too much money invested in that bike, especially, since it is brand new - to accept that answer - get it replaced........

Distributor checked it over and said that it's just in the paint, at least I've made them aware of the issue, incase it gets any worse. Thanks for the replies everyone.

And,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,, you think a crack/and split in the paint, on a brand new bike, is OK**********? It's certainly not going to get better, and, any further detachment will be handled HOW **********??

Nope, I'm not happy with it, but I'm glad it's only the paint, if it's the only one, I'll put up with it, if I see more sprouting up I'll be calling for a repaint.
