Hello from Springfield, MO!

I'm Justin. I hail from Springfield, MO. I'm 27, work full-time at Autozone, I'm also in the Army and work on Helicopters. I picked up riding about 2 years ago, nothing too crazy, just have fun riding around town and with friends. I'm mostly into working on and building cars, mainly Honda's. Which is my true passion. Below is my "build" thread from my local car forum. Please bare with me, as I'm new to terms and correct sayings in the bike world.

For a long time I've wanted to get a bike. My dad has had this bike for something like 10 years. Recently I've been doing some research and talking to other bike people and my friend Alex (who happens to work at Sunshine Bike, a local bike shop) about building one. I was talking to Alex the other day, he suggested just getting my dad's bike and doing what I want with it. So yesterday, I called dad he's like "sure, you can have it". Let the party begin. Loaded it up on the newly finished bike rack, drove to Sunshine Bike to let Alex check it out. Right now the plans on to convert to a single speed, I would love to convert to a fixie but with the frame the way it was, single is all I'm getting. Alex and I looked at it, and immediately started recommending parts. Yesterday's total $80.96. Bought me new chain, singulator, new seat and that's it. The pics are from yesterday, but today's progress: Tore it down, found out I have a bend axle on the rear. No biggie, I planned on getting new wheels when I got back from my training.

Things I need to get...

New wheels
Paint
Brakes
Handle bars
Pedals

Here are pics from yesterday, I'll take some of my progress today.

LOL you guys are HIGHlarious.

I secretly made the journey home tonight, took the bike to my cousins with me. Alex was over, so I asked him to show me how to tear it down. Seriously, 3 min and it was tore down. Heading to Sunshine Bike tomorrow to get my wheels, tires, tubes, brakes, cables, misc stuff all sorted out. Alex couldn't take the crank off at my cousins, so he's gonna knock that out, then bring the frame home for a little "touchup" work

Box 'O random parts!

Well today was a VERY successful day! Got up a bit early, headed to my cousin Chad's to go hit up some garage sales. Which never happened!! Either way, headed over to Sunshine Bike to have Alex remove my bottom bracket. While one of Alex's co workers disassembled the bike, we walked around and talked about options for replacement parts. Ended up picking up new: Wheels, tubes, tires, brakes, rear 17 tooth cog, Surley spacers, new bottom bracket, brake levers. Lets just say this is a little more expensive than I expected, but all is well! Waiting on my Surley cog spacer for the rear wheel to come in on Wednesday, then I'll be set. After we left the shop, Chad and I headed to the store to pick up some supplies. Headed to the house, I then proceeded to coat the bike in aircraft stripper, after I got the bike down to bare metal, scuffed it up a bit. Laid some primer down. Waited a bit, wetsanded the primer, washed it again. First coat of paint: not so good. Chad's sister Casie was painting something else in the garage and some of her over spray ended up on the bike. Needless to say I was a little upset, but I decided to change the color at the last minute. Headed back to the store for new paint. Painted, cleared and dry. Here's some pics of the progress and new goodies I got today!!

Wheels & Tires

Brakes, Brake Levers, Tubes, Rear Cog, Bottom Bracket

Stripper

Primer

1 Attempt at Paint

Final Attempt and Success!!

In a few days Alex and I will be putting it back together. Still need to decide on grips and pedals.

Finally went to get the bike put back together today! Originally I intended on just getting the bottom bracket installed (due to me not have the correct tool). Buckley (works at Sunshine Bike) was helping me today, then he asked "what all parts do you have?" Well when I grabbed the bike I had just about everything. Didn't have the chain, brake cables or my seat. Buckley said he would just throw it all together, give me a chain and cables so I could ride it. He took his time, did it right which I didn't expect anything less!! It was a little interesting riding it without a seat, but I managed. I'm VERY happy with the results of the bike. Alot of people were asking what kinda $$ I had into the bike. I gathered just a guess: $325-$345 in the whole bike. Which isn't bad, everything is new, except the main gear. Here are the pics minus the seat which WILL be on the bike tomorrow for sure. I must say, the bike is PERFECT for my size. The last pic, is my buddy Cody who is like 6'5" is standing next to it.

And here is round 2!!!

It's time to re-do my bike. Figured it would give me time to get it "right" this time. Round one consisted of complete frame strip down, almost all new parts and fresh coat of paint. Paint chosen for round 1, was Wrinkle Black...just like on my valve cover. It came out decent the first time, but wasn't very sturdy.

Giant "Iguana" Frame
Single Speed Conversion
Crank Teeth - 38
Rear Cog - 14 (w/ optional 17)

Previous parts that I'll be re-using.

Plans currently, strip the frame back down to bare metal. Figure out a color scheme. Here's my progress from tonight.

I'll post more pics when I get a chance of each stage. Hopefully gonna be stripping it Tuesday.

Did some work today on Ana (btw that's her nickname). Prepped the wheels for paint. Gonna have Alex take the bike to his work (Sunshine Bike) and strip the rest of the frame. I do not have the tool to remove the bottom bracket at home, so that's why he's taking it. After he gets it stripped the rest of the way, I'll be using aircraft stripper to remove all the other paint. Once that's completed, it will get primed, wetsanded, the base coat and clear.

I've decided on a color already, I was up in the air about it. But after some looking around I found the color I was looking for. Called my buddy and had the color ordered. I wanted to do something a little different this time, something a little off the wall. I'm not giving the color away just yet, but the wheels are getting painted white with a heavy clear. I'm gonna try and strip the finish off the brake components and refinish those in corresponding colors to match.

Also this time, I will be replacing old pitted and nasty hardware. I plan on having this done by Spring for our local car meet. So no rush for me.

More tear down

Cleaned some nasty parts. These had old nasty grease on it, which was starting to rust.

Rear wheel prepped, still have to take the cog off and start taping stuff.

Front wheel will require more work. The spokes were black on the front wheel, still in the process of stripping all the original color off them.

Last but not least is Alex's BMX Bike that we are continuing to strip. His plan is to clear the frame stripped for that "natural" look.

Hope your still with me, as I'm sure that was lengthy! Enjoy, I know I will!

I think last Spring and summer I put about 150 miles on it.
