Hello from Alabama!

I came here looking for music playlists and found an interesting thread about living simply in the 'carfree' forum. I've been reading it off and on the last week: fascinating stuff! I used to ride mountain bikes around the neighborhood as a kid, but in 10th grade or so I received my first computer for Christmas and became rather sedentary. Now I'm an adult, increasingly closer to 30 than 20, and I've managed to recover from my slothful adolescence. Last year I committed to an active lifestyle and lost over a hundred pounds: I look forward to continuing that trend this year, and intend to get back into cycling as soon as circumstances allow. While I see biking as a way to get exercise, I'm more interested in the freedom it will give me. I like being autonomous, and my dream is to live in a town where I can walk or cycle wherever I need to go. While my city isn't exactly bike-friendly, I should still be able to get around comfortably.

Happy riding.

Welcome to the forums!

I like that thought. I have a cousin who lives in Salt Lake City, and he doesn't even own a car. He either walks/runs or bikes to get anywhere 99% of the time. In the rare instance when he needs a car (groceries, out of town trip, etc), he mostly rents a zip car. He's a bit extreme, but I'd like to get there some day too.
